However, this remarkable success has sparked unrest among Samsung's workforce. Tens of thousands of employees have threatened to initiate a walkout, a move that could disrupt vital memory chip production just when the AI sector is in desperate need of these components.

Just hours before the anticipated strike was set to commence on Thursday, workers' unions announced they had secured a tentative agreement with company management. The deal, which still awaits a vote from union members, represents a significant achievement for Samsung employees demanding increased wages in light of the company's record earnings.

The potential strike, which could have involved over 48,000 employees (nearly 40% of Samsung's Korean workforce) over an anticipated 18-day period, would have constituted the largest in the company's history. Most of the workers poised to participate are involved in the production of memory chips, essential for AI hardware made by major players like Nvidia and AMD.

The looming production interruption alarmed both the South Korean government and the global tech community. With Samsung accounting for over 12% of South Korea's GDP last year, any halt in its semiconductor output could have far-reaching consequences. South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok expressed these concerns, highlighting that disruptions could inflict deep economic scars beyond the company itself.

This development occurs within a broader context where the expansion of AI is reshaping tech employment worldwide. Recently, companies like Meta announced significant layoffs and restructurings, reallocating resources to focus on AI advancements.

Employees at Samsung's Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant were gearing up for work on Thursday amid these tensions. Last month, Samsung disclosed record profits—surging more than eightfold compared to the same period last year—which further fueled employee demands for a greater share of the financial windfall.

Union leaders are advocating for the removal of the existing 50% cap on bonuses and want 15% of annual operating profit to be designated for bonuses, along with extending these arrangements into the future. Even though Samsung's chip production workers typically enjoy competitive salaries, the disparity in bonus structures compared to rival chipmaker SK Hynix—who has similarly posted record profits and recently revamped their compensation plan—has galvanized the workers.

Under Hynix’s new framework, employees can earn bonuses exceeding 1,000% of their base salaries, with some potentially reaching as high as 3,000% by 2025. Average bonuses are set to hit 700 million won (around $465,000) per employee.

Samsung's unions pointed out that the semiconductor sector is competing fiercely for skilled talent, with foreign companies actively enticing engineers with generous offers. In light of this competitive landscape, the tentative deal reached on Wednesday eliminates the previous cap on bonuses and allocates 10.5% of business profit for this purpose.

While recognizing that the agreement arrived later than anticipated, Samsung stated its commitment to fostering improved relations with labor to prevent future disputes.

The negotiation has ignited a national dialogue about wealth distribution, particularly given the enormous profits being generated by industry giants like Samsung and SK Hynix. Labor advocacy groups have voiced concerns about the growing polarization in employment security, contrasting the fortune of permanently employed workers at conglomerates with those in less secure positions lacking adequate protections.

As the semiconductor supply chain faces intense pressure, major tech firms are racing to obtain high-performance AI processors to expand their data infrastructures and enhance AI capabilities. The demand surge reflects a transformation in the memory chip industry, once viewed as low-margin but now essential for cutting-edge applications.

Industry analysts have indicated this shortage could last until 2028, with memory chip prices expected to see significant increases.

As a leading player in the memory chip market, Samsung has regained momentum after previously lagging behind SK Hynix due to dip in profits. However, it has since capitalized on the ever-growing demand for memory chips, positioning itself strongly in the face of ongoing challenges.

Should the unions vote against the provisional agreement, a strike could still unfold, potentially impacting semiconductor supply. Experts have warned that any disruption among major suppliers could have adverse effects on the entire AI ecosystem, intensifying the current shortages and potentially prolonging price hikes in the industry. Nevertheless, a total production halt seems unlikely, particularly following a court ruling that mandates normal staffing levels for safety operations related to chip production.
