Mercor, an AI data labeling company established by some of the youngest self-made billionaires in the world, is reportedly negotiating a significant funding round aiming to secure $500 million at a staggering valuation of $20 billion. This information comes from an insider knowledgeable about the fundraising efforts.
If successful, this new funding will effectively double Mercor's valuation within just under a year. Last September, the company raised $350 million, achieving a valuation of $10 billion with the support of investors such as Felicis Ventures, Benchmark, and General Catalyst. The identities of the investors for the new funding round have not yet been disclosed.
The deal is expected to finalize later this month, although the source indicated that the terms might still be subject to change. Should the funding round close as planned, co-founders and co-CEOs Brendan Foody and Adarsh Hiremath, along with board chairman Surya Midha, could see their individual net worths reach approximately $4.3 billion, based on estimates from Forbes.
A spokesperson from Mercor refrained from commenting on the net worth of the founders, while Bloomberg had earlier reported on the company’s ongoing fundraising discussions at a $20 billion valuation.
Mercor's platform plays a crucial role in aiding advanced AI organizations like OpenAI to enhance their models by employing experts across various fields—including PhDs, lawyers, bankers, scientists, and programmers—to generate high-quality training data.
This funding initiative comes at a time when Mercor has navigated several challenges. In April, the firm disclosed that it experienced a major security breach, being one of many firms affected by a widespread hacking incident associated with the open-source initiative LiteLLM. Additionally, the company has dealt with other internal issues, including the termination of an employee for embezzlement and concerns regarding suspected infiltration by North Korean operatives utilizing stolen access credentials, as reported by Forbes.
Despite these hurdles, Mercor's financial growth has been remarkable. The company announced that it surpassed $2 billion in annualized revenue by June, achieving a dramatic increase in sales just months after it crossed the $1 billion mark in February. Since its inception in 2023, Mercor has emerged as a leading example of the thriving Silicon Valley AI startup scene, particularly those founded by exceptionally young and financially successful individuals. The co-founders, who met during their high school debate team in the Bay Area, made headlines in October when they collectively became the youngest self-made billionaires in history at the age of just 22.
