Businesses are gearing up for a future dominated by agentic commerce, where AI agents take on the responsibility of purchasing products for consumers.
Currently, this phenomenon isn't widespread. At present, AI-driven answer engines utilizing large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode and Gemini are assisting consumers in their shopping journeys, but they’re not yet significantly impacting sales figures. Data from Similarweb indicates that between August 2025 and January, these AI answer engines directed 49.5 million visitors to the online marketplaces of five major retailers—Amazon, Walmart, Target, Temu, and eBay. Amazon accounted for 28% of this traffic, closely followed by Walmart, which attracted 27%.
While this represents a noticeable increase, it still constitutes a small portion of overall ecommerce traffic. The exact nature of agentic commerce remains uncertain as it evolves, but various potential scenarios are already emerging.
