Hank Green, known for his work as a novelist, comedian, and YouTuber—amassing a following of 3.2 million subscribers—has recently addressed his audience regarding his increasing dependency on AI chatbots.

The issue arose during a video on his educational channel, Complexly, when he unexpectedly said the phrase “I appreciate the pushback.” This led many viewers to speculate that his script had been partially created with the help of a chatbot, inadvertently revealing its response to one of his prompts.

In a post that has since been removed from X, Green admitted that he had been under significant pressure while producing the video and had utilized ChatGPT for research purposes. However, he clarified that the “pushback” line was intended as a reply to a guest in the episode.

Subsequently, Green expressed a more thorough apology on Reddit, stating that he felt “mortified” about disappointing his audience and announced his intention to scale back his video output. He emphasized that he only employed ChatGPT to source papers and materials relevant to his research, maintaining that the content and perspective he shared were distinctly his own. Nonetheless, he recognized the validity of criticism regarding how he might be “diluting” his authenticity.

While Green affirmed that he does not outright reject AI, he voiced several concerns regarding the technology, such as its implications for climate change and the rapid consolidation of economic power by AI corporations.

“Ultimately, I’m most afraid of compromising my integrity for my audience, but I haven’t been managing my impulses very well,” Green remarked. “I want to ensure that my words are genuinely my own. It has always been the case, but I’ve been moving so quickly that my process has become muddled, and I aim to clarify that moving forward.”

It appears Green plans to take the necessary time to solidify this clarity. He mentioned that he would be reducing the frequency of uploads across his YouTube channels, expressing a desire to focus on projects similar to a recent meditative video where he felt deeply connected to the writing process. He also hinted at creating more unscripted, spontaneous videos where he shares his candid thoughts directly with the camera.

“Overall, I need to confront the reality that the dopamine rush I’ve experienced from engaging with large language models and constantly pushing for more is not beneficial for either my well-being or the broader community,” Green concluded. “It’s reckless and has distanced me from understanding where my audience really stands.”
