The common narrative suggests that the emergence of AGI or ASI will happen suddenly, almost out of nowhere, akin to a lightning strike illuminating a dark sky.
An alternative perspective argues that the journey towards AGI and ASI will be a series of gradual, calculated advancements rather than one cataclysmic moment. This methodical approach could lead us to the pinnacle of AI over time, step by step.
Let’s delve deeper into this discussion.
The Quest for AGI and ASI Researchers are heavily invested in the pursuit of advancing AI technologies, with the overarching aim of achieving AGI, which is intelligence reminiscent of human capability. ASI, on the other hand, would surpass human intellect, providing exceptional advantages across various domains. This concept imagines a rapid transition from conventional to advanced AI, triggered by an unforeseen surge in intelligence. Terms like the "AI foom" or the phenomena of "AI singularity" are commonly used to describe this anticipated event. The scenario suggests that a chain reaction of intelligence could ignite, propelling us towards AGI or ASI with unexpected speed.
It's theorized that once an initial intelligence peak (AGI) is reached, a subsequent explosion could elevate it further to ASI. Some envision a scenario where a brilliant individual or team uncovers a groundbreaking formula that acts as a gateway to the explosion of intelligence. The discovery could originate from an innovative algorithm or strategy, propelling AI advancements to unprecedented heights.
This leads to the belief that the first entity—be it an individual, a corporation, or even a nation—capable of realizing AGI or ASI will experience significant influence and power on the global stage.
Challenges to the Intelligence Explosion Theory A significant concern surrounding the intelligence explosion hypothesis is the lack of empirical evidence to validate its feasibility. It remains a captivating notion yet to be substantiated by concrete findings. Thus, while the theory is intriguing, the possibility of achieving such a breakthrough remains shrouded in uncertainty.
Revisiting the Incremental Approach So far, AI development has largely followed a gradual, incremental path, with progress driven by continuous experimentation. Regardless, the potential for a sudden miracle remains—waiting just beyond the horizon.

Unintentional Barriers to Pinnacle AI Assuming we continue down this incremental path, the development of AGI might occur without necessitating a dramatic intelligence explosion. It’s conceivable that through steady efforts, we could unexpectedly arrive at AGI, celebrating our progress along the way. Alternatively, a significant breakthrough could pivot us towards AGI or ASI through means other than a grand intelligence explosion.
However, there’s also a cautionary tale about potentially hindering our progress. If excessive controls are enforced to prevent AI from spiraling out of control, we may inadvertently stifle an imminent intelligence explosion that was within reach. Thus, while attempting to keep AI safely in check, we could unknowingly inhibit our own advancements, leading us to forever search for AGI or ASI without realizing the opportunity we’ve missed.
