Restaurants everywhere, including San Antonio, are facing significant challenges due to increasing overheads and food costs, making profitability elusive. Customer engagement—or the lack thereof—can determine a restaurant's success. In an effort to save costs, many local establishments are now utilizing AI-generated menus, advertisements, flyers, and other design elements. However, in a competitive culinary landscape, these AI-generated food images may do more harm than good.
With several years of experience in restaurant coverage, I've observed that AI-generated food visuals can raise concerns among consumers who are already hesitant about dining out and spending their money. While effective advertising can elevate a restaurant’s visibility, the prevalence of poorly executed AI images in the food industry is troubling.
The distinction between genuine and AI-generated images can often be subtle, though many synthetic food representations are easily identifiable due to unnatural textures or colors that typical software struggles to emulate. Given a choice, I would prefer dining at an establishment that features authentic photos of its offerings rather than ones using obviously artificial representations. The reality is, a poorly managed AI tool can also introduce text errors that further mislead customers.
I completely understand why restaurants in San Antonio are turning to AI as a cost-saving measure. For some, it may provide a practical solution when budget constraints prevent hiring professional graphic designers or photographers. Yet, considering the accessibility of smartphone cameras in 2026 and the availability of user-friendly design programs like Canva or GIMP, there is immense value in investing in professional help to create high-quality visuals.
Moreover, the fonts and text choices can be telling indicators of whether a design is AI-generated, which could further impact a restaurant's credibility. In an era when authenticity is key, relying on artificial imagery might not be the best strategy for attracting and retaining customers.
