This week, OpenAI made headlines by introducing its inaugural piece of hardware: a compact keyboard priced at $230. However, not as widely reported is the launch of a unique addition in their product lineup—a ChatGPT-branded basketball.

The basketball is part of the “Pause. Play. Prompt.” initiative, which serves as a tangible reminder that creativity goes beyond our digital devices, as noted in its product description. Although details about this campaign are scarce on OpenAI's website, it seems to be a call for users to engage in more outdoor activities rather than remain glued to screens all day.

This move reflects an increasing awareness among tech firms about the importance of mental health.

Retailing for $70—or about 56 million input tokens for GPT-5—the basketball is constructed entirely from rubber, making it more suitable for outdoor play compared to the pricier leather balls typically seen in professional settings. It’s refreshing to see OpenAI promote active outdoor gameplay, especially as the generative AI sector continues to heighten carbon footprints.

However, it's challenging to identify the ideal audience for the ChatGPT basketball. One might wonder who would bring such an item to a local court. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable appearing with a ChatGPT basketball on a Philadelphia community court, no matter the cost. It might hold a spot as ironic merchandise if obtained for free at a tech conference, akin to cherished quirky items from past events.

In defense of this basketball, it’s worth noting that the AI sector isn’t always the best at aligning products with consumer demand. I’m still remembering the ill-fated Humane AI Pin.

In addition to the basketball, OpenAI has rolled out a selection of merchandise featuring motivational slogans, such as “Good research takes time.” This could be ideal for startup founders facing pressure from investors for quicker results. The $175 quarter-zip top with “research” elegantly scripted could also appeal, although its description, which nostalgically evokes “our days in academia,” might alienate the more self-taught coding enthusiast crowd. And really, can an inanimate object truly reminisce about one’s academic experiences? Should we expect coherent sentences from those who compose their emails with ChatGPT?

All said and done, there's no harm in a little corporate merchandise. If OpenAI ever considers commissioning ceramic artists to craft functional dinnerware that celebrates its heritage, I’d love to throw my name in the hat.
