During a confirmation hearing on July 15, 2026, Jay Clayton, the nominated Director of National Intelligence, revealed that he has been appointed by the Trump administration as the new leader focused on artificial intelligence. This appointment comes in response to mounting concerns regarding the challenges and dangers associated with the rapid advancement of AI technologies, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Clayton expressed to the Journal that he will spearhead a White House task force dedicated to exploring the risks and potential of AI. The team has a timeframe of 120 days to conduct research and generate a report that will include recommendations about the federal government's role and responsibilities as they relate to these technologies.
“The president requested a team be established to ensure we maintain our leadership in superintelligence and prioritize the interests of the American people,” Clayton mentioned, according to the Journal.
The task force will be designated as the "Super Intelligence Force," or SI, aligning with President Donald Trump's preference for this terminology over the conventional "AI." As a result, Clayton will take on the role of AI czar, as confirmed by a senior official within the White House.
A request for comment from CNBC to the White House went unanswered.
In September, Trump announced his intentions for this initiative via a post on Truth Social, indicating the creation of an "AI Force" aimed at promoting the industry while identifying and addressing bad actors.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry. Rather, we will cherish it, support it, and monitor its development,” Trump stated in the announcement, which also outlined plans to appoint an AI czar.
“Only high-I.Q. individuals need apply!” he added in his post.
