Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is currently engaged in discussions with the White House regarding a potential government investment in the AI company, as confirmed by CNBC on Friday.
These negotiations have been ongoing for over a year, initially brought to light during Altman's discussions with the Trump administration in 2025, as revealed by an insider who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information.
This week, Altman continued to meet with various legislators and officials in Washington to deliberate on regulatory matters and recent advancements in artificial intelligence.
A significant aspect of the proposed deal might involve OpenAI allocating equity to the federal government, aiming to establish what has been referred to as a "Public Wealth Fund." This concept was introduced in OpenAI's policy proposals from April, emphasizing the potential for such a fund to invest in a variety of long-term assets. The fund is designed to allow citizens to share in the financial benefits stemming from the growth of AI technologies, potentially providing direct returns to the public.
Details regarding the investment terms are yet to be finalized and remain open to modifications. Notus was the first to report on these latest discussions.
On Friday, President Donald Trump commented on the negotiations while speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One.
He mentioned, "There are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner." Furthermore, he indicated that he plans to engage with AI companies "in the very short, very near future."
