Though the term "artificial general intelligence" emerged in the 1990s, its conceptual roots extend back much further, notably to British computer scientist Alan Turing. In his influential 1950 paper, Turing aimed to establish a framework for evaluating machine intelligence in the most objective way possible. He proposed the now-famous Turing test: if a human could engage in a text-based conversation with a machine and could not discern whether they were interacting with a computer or a human, then the machine could be considered intelligent in some capacity.
