Elon Musk's ambitious supercomputer initiative, Project Colossus, often described as a "gigafactory of compute," is currently operational in Memphis, Tennessee, as of August 22, 2024.

In a significant move, SpaceX has entered into a substantial agreement with Reflection AI, a rising open-source artificial intelligence startup, marking yet another company to leverage Musk's Colossus infrastructure.

As part of this agreement, Reflection AI will gain immediate access to advanced Nvidia GB300 chips, which are highly regarded for training and executing sophisticated models. This collaboration will see Reflection paying SpaceX $150 million each month, starting from July 1, 2026, until 2029. Should the agreement last its full term, total payments could reach approximately $6.3 billion.

Both companies have the option to terminate the agreement with 90 days' notice after an initial three-month period.

This partnership reflects SpaceX's strategic utilization of its expansive data center expansion in the wake of its record-setting initial public offering. The development of Colossus was partly aimed at powering Grok, Musk's own AI chatbot that competes with ChatGPT. Now, SpaceX is leveraging this infrastructure to provide computing power to external AI developers.

SpaceX has previously secured similar agreements with notable entities such as Anthropic, Google, and Cursor, with plans for an acquisition of Cursor. The inclusion of Reflection AI represents not only a new customer but also a different strategic focus: an AI lab dedicated to open-source models, particularly relevant as organizations reassess their reliance on closed AI systems.

The timing of this agreement is significant. The open-source AI sector has been gaining traction, especially following Anthropic's decision to restrict access to services like Fable and Mythos, which raised concerns about the risks posed by relying on proprietary model providers for essential applications. This development bolsters the case for open-model companies, emphasizing the importance of transparency, customization, and user control over AI models.
