Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican and chair of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, will welcome Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh for his inaugural appearance before the committee on Wednesday. During this meeting, Warsh will present the semiannual monetary policy report to Congress. However, Scott, in a recent interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, expressed his desire for the discussion to extend beyond just monetary matters.
Scott emphasized the significance of the Federal Reserve's dual mandate, which focuses on price stability and employment. He highlighted the need to address the implications of artificial intelligence, particularly in his home state of South Carolina. "A key question we should be exploring is how to ensure that these data centers adequately contribute to their electricity and water usage," he remarked.
In South Carolina, there are growing calls to impose bans on data centers that are integral to artificial intelligence development. Moratoriums on data centers are becoming more prevalent nationwide, driven by public concern over rising utility costs.
Scott also posed a broader question regarding the future global landscape. "When we look at the bigger picture, the fundamental question we face is who will lead the future—China or the United States? Artificial intelligence will play a crucial role in determining that outcome," he stated. "It's essential that we address our domestic challenges to position ourselves favorably on the world stage."
