While I don’t claim to be an expert, I genuinely believe that artificial intelligence (AI) could significantly accelerate research into multiple sclerosis (MS).

A few years back, I wrote about my amateur interest in psychology, recognizing my limitations in fully grasping the field. Similarly, AI comes to mind as another topic where my understanding is basic at best. Although I have familiarized myself with the concept, everything in this column reflects my personal views.

During my childhood, AI was often depicted in science fiction – an ominous presence that would emerge in a distant future. Well, that future has arrived, and AI is carving out a vital role in healthcare, particularly in the treatment and management of MS.

Reflecting on my time in the Army, I often heard the phrase, “This is happening, so make peace with it,” a sentiment I now echo to my own kids. It applies to AI as well; regardless of my personal feelings, AI is already influencing healthcare delivery for MS, and I believe its impact will only grow. So I’ve chosen to embrace this evolution.

Of course, this technology isn’t without its challenges. One of the most pressing concerns is that AI depends entirely on the data it receives, which can be biased. Understanding MS is a dynamic process; if a database lacks current and precise information, the insights generated will inevitably reflect outdated knowledge.

Another concern is the treatment of subjective information provided by patients. If AI is programmed to assume that such input is unreliable, it may not give these insights the weight they deserve. The efficiency of sorting and summarizing extensive amounts of data is diminished if the initial data is flawed because of human biases.

Ironically, this ability to process vast quantities of information is one of AI’s key benefits. Despite my wishful thinking at times, I know I’m not the sole patient on my neurologist’s roster. An AI tool that can analyze my medical history and present a clear summary can free up healthcare professionals to devote more time to patient care.

Furthermore, I suspect that AI can play an essential role in managing data from research and clinical trials, which typically involve intricate calculations and can be quite time-consuming. If utilized effectively, AI could streamline these processes, accelerating MS research. For me, that progress cannot come soon enough, so I support any advancements that enhance efficiency.

Beyond healthcare, AI has the potential to optimize various other sectors. To clarify, I haven’t yet employed any AI tools for composing this column. At present, I don’t plan to start, but I acknowledge that using AI might lead to a more concise result. Those who read my work may notice a difference if I ever do opt for AI assistance, as I tend to get a bit wordy.
