In a significant transformation, Oracle has eliminated 21,000 positions over the past year, amounting to nearly 13% of its total workforce. This reduction brings the company's full-time employee count down to 141,000 as of May 2026, a decrease from 162,000 a year earlier, as detailed in its recent annual regulatory report. As a result of these changes, Oracle's stock experienced a dip of approximately 1% on Tuesday and has fallen over 10% since the start of the year, aligning with a broader downturn in the tech sector.
The company attributes these layoffs, in part, to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence across its operations. Oracle reported spending $1.8 billion on restructuring, a substantial increase from the $374 million spent the previous year. In its filing, Oracle acknowledged that such workforce reductions can be challenging, citing the potential for increased restructuring expenses and impacts on productivity.
The company expressed concerns that these changes might lead to certain complications, including a shortage of skilled workers, loss of critical institutional knowledge, and negative effects on employee morale and retention. Oracle emphasized that as its cloud and AI sectors expand, it will continuously adjust its workforce and reorganize its development teams to ensure that the right talent is in place to provide top-tier cloud and AI solutions to its global customer base, as stated in a comment shared with CNBC.
