Details are emerging about OpenAI's enigmatic new hardware device, characterized earlier as an AI-driven smart speaker intended to be the tangible embodiment of ChatGPT.
According to a report from Bloomberg, this innovative device will feature a unique "donut-shaped" design, allowing users to transport it easily throughout their homes and set it down in various spots like bedside tables or kitchen counters.
Constructed from "high-quality metal," it promises to sport a "premium look," and intriguingly, it will include notable "moving parts," as per sources who spoke to Bloomberg.
The anticipated price range for this device may land between $300 and $400, positioning it at a higher price point than typical smart speakers. For context, Amazon’s offerings generally range from around $40 for basic models to $240 for higher-end versions.
In summary, we're looking at an advanced and potentially pricey AI-enabled speaker that resembles a donut and features—and raises questions about—moving components. OpenAI’s venture into smart home technology makes logical sense, aiming to integrate ChatGPT more deeply into everyday life. Nonetheless, smart speakers have historically struggled to yield profitability, suggesting a challenging market landscape that could complicate this launch.
Developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, a design studio established by renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive, the device is expected to hit the market around 2027, based on Bloomberg’s insights.
However, OpenAI's entry into the hardware sector is not without challenges. The company currently faces a lawsuit from Apple, which alleges that OpenAI has misappropriated trade secrets. OpenAI has refuted these accusations.
