In a recent conversation with Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, disclosed that the company is in the process of creating a range of devices designed to facilitate interaction with its AI models. While he did not confirm speculation about a potential smart speaker rumored to be released in 2027, nor previous suggestions that it could be a wearable device similar to the Humane AI pin, he hinted that these innovations would be available sooner rather than later.
When asked about the potential effects of Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI on the development of these devices, which involve collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, Brockman asserted that OpenAI's focus remains on its internal technology and development. He emphasized that the company isn't interested in accessing the trade secrets of other firms and expressed confidence in OpenAI’s own innovative capabilities.
Brockman also shared his vision for the future of human-computer interaction, suggesting that verbal communication will become the primary mode of interacting with computers for most tasks. Regarding the challenge posed by open office environments where multiple individuals might be speaking to their devices, he mentioned the emergence of soundproof "beak" masks as a creative, albeit imperfect, solution to address privacy concerns in such settings.
Additionally, Brockman confirmed that OpenAI is actively working on enhancing trust in its AI models, particularly addressing issues surrounding the privacy of ChatGPT’s "temporary chat" feature. The company is developing technological measures aimed at providing “verifiable, auditable guarantees” to ensure that only the AI has access to users’ private data.
