In a significant development, OpenAI announced on Thursday that it will begin displaying advertisements to users on its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers in India. This decision follows a recent alteration in its terms of service, which indicated that advertisements would be part of the user experience while utilizing the AI assistant.
OpenAI revealed in February that its ChatGPT platform boasts over 100 million weekly active users in India, with a large proportion subscribing to the free or more affordable Go plans.
Beginning this week, OpenAI plans to roll out ads for 50 different brands, having teamed up with advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom to facilitate this initiative. Furthermore, the company is set to introduce an ad management tool next month, enabling marketers to develop advertising campaigns, provided they meet a daily minimum expenditure of ₹725 (approximately $7.60).
Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, commented, “With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can engage users during relevant moments, helping them make informed decisions as they arise.”
OpenAI has made considerable efforts to grow its presence in India, launching a budget-friendly plan for ChatGPT Go at under $5 in August 2025. The company even executed a limited-time promotion that offered this plan for free for an entire year. To further boost its visibility, it extensively marketed its offerings during major sporting events, such as the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournaments. More recently, it appointed the former head of Uber's Indian operations to oversee its growth strategies in the region.
The ad initiative is not entirely new; OpenAI began integrating ads for its U.S. users back in February and extended the program to European users earlier this month.
As OpenAI gears up for a potential IPO anticipated within this year or the next, it is actively seeking to diversify and strengthen its revenue streams. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company reported earnings of $6.7 billion in the second quarter ending June 2026, a notable increase from $5.7 billion in the preceding quarter.
In a report published last November, The Information indicated that OpenAI aspires to reach 220 million paying subscribers by 2030, noting that at that time, approximately 35 million users were subscribed to its Plus and Pro plans.
