OpenAI is set to offer its artificial intelligence models to developers via Google Cloud, marking a significant step in the competitive landscape between the two tech giants.
This collaboration signals OpenAI's strategic move to broaden its technology distribution among enterprise developers. Just a few months back, OpenAI announced that Microsoft would no longer hold an exclusive license to its intellectual property. Almost immediately after this announcement, cloud powerhouse Amazon revealed its intentions to host OpenAI's models.
Now, Google is entering the fray, intending to integrate OpenAI's GPT products into its cloud services, including the model garden and Antigravity coding tool, which are expected to be available in the upcoming weeks.
In a blog post, OpenAI noted, "Google Cloud's longstanding investment in machine learning and AI has established it as a key destination for AI projects and the developers and data scientists behind them."
Google has experienced substantial growth in its cloud computing sector this year. Reports indicate that annual revenue growth accelerated to around 82% in the second quarter, up from 63% in the first quarter, driven in part by increased demand for AI models and custom chips. In contrast, Amazon and Microsoft saw their cloud growth rates reach 37% and 42%, respectively. All three companies are scheduled to announce their quarterly results next week.
Data from corporate card issuer Ramp shows that the majority of business spending on AI is directed toward OpenAI and Anthropic, although some corporate IT departments have begun integrating Google's Gemini models into their systems. Google recently introduced its next-generation AI model, Gemini 4 Argon, in September.
Founded in 2015, OpenAI was established as a response to the concentration of AI research within companies like Google. In 2017, Google employees contributed to the pivotal Transformer academic paper that advanced AI research, yet it was OpenAI that propelled the technology into mainstream use with ChatGPT. Currently, OpenAI is attracting investors with a valuation of $1.4 trillion and is aiming for an initial public offering.
Previously, in a display of collaboration, Google and OpenAI joined forces last year, with OpenAI leveraging Google’s cloud infrastructure to run ChatGPT and its API. This relationship highlights the evolving synergy between their technologies.
