OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop application has garnered attention for its somewhat complex interface, featuring distinct Chat and Codex sections, along with separate Chat and Work tabs under the Chat category. This design can make it challenging for users to keep track of their projects and where they are operating within the software.
To simplify this experience, OpenAI is planning to integrate the Chat and Work tabs into a single cohesive space within the ChatGPT framework. This development was shared with users through an email, indicating that it will initially be available to a select group for feedback before a wider rollout.
The integration is designed to streamline the user workflow, allowing for a seamless transition from brainstorming ideas to executing them all within one platform. Users will be able to import files and utilize plugins while instructing ChatGPT to perform various tasks, like building a website or preparing a presentation, all while maintaining oversight on its progress. It’s important to note that the Codex functionality will still exist as a separate feature within the ChatGPT app, as stated in the communication.
In addition to these changes, OpenAI noted that both ChatGPT and Codex will share the same token allowance. While this update is expected to have minimal impact on most users, certain individuals may find themselves needing to wait for token resets more often, depending on their usage patterns and model access.
This move comes on the heels of competitor Anthropic's decision to combine the chat and collaboration functions of its Claude product into a single interface last September.
