At the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi on February 19, 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a significant move for the company: the introduction of advertisements in ChatGPT for certain subscription plans in India, a crucial and rapidly growing market for the firm. This decision aims to enhance revenue ahead of OpenAI's anticipated public offering next year.
A spokesperson for OpenAI highlighted that advertising would facilitate "broader access to ChatGPT via free and lower-cost tiers." The ads have launched for users on the complimentary service as well as those subscribed to the 'Go' plan, priced at 399 rupees (approximately $4) per month.
This advertising feature is now operational in 38 countries globally, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, and numerous European countries. The spokesperson noted India’s importance, stating it is one of the platform's largest and most engaged markets. OpenAI’s focus is on gathering insights from both users and advertisers while maintaining the quality and experience that users value in ChatGPT.
Importantly, OpenAI clarified that it does not serve ads to users who are identified or predicted by the algorithm to be under the age of 18.
As the company prepares to go public in 2027, it faces increasing pressure to validate its $852 billion valuation, especially since it trails behind Anthropic, its competitor, which is also gearing up for an IPO. Experts suggest that monetization through advertising could help OpenAI offset the costs related to processing user queries and mitigate losses.
While Anthropic garners a larger portion of its revenue from enterprise clients, OpenAI has found its niche among individual users, according to Ujjwal Chaudhry, a partner at market analysis firm Analysys Mason. He emphasizes that an advertising model is most effective for monetizing a broad consumer base, noting that online ads represent over 75% of the global advertising expenditure, which amounts to approximately $1.18 trillion. The market for in-app advertisements is estimated at $400 billion.
OpenAI assured that the ads will be distinctly delineated and positioned below the ChatGPT responses, emphasizing that "Answer independence is non-negotiable."
Earlier this year, Anthropic publicly criticized OpenAI's initiative to implement ads, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining an ad-free environment for its chatbot, Claude. Users interacting with Claude will not see any ads or sponsored content influencing their conversations, ensuring the integrity of the chatbot’s responses remains intact.
