OpenAI is contemplating substantial price reductions for its artificial intelligence services to attract customers from its competitor, Anthropic, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday evening. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that OpenAI is considering major cuts to the prices it charges for tokens, which are the units used to bill for AI services. This potential adjustment is anticipated in response to similar price reductions expected from Anthropic.
Currently, OpenAI offers tiered subscription plans for its leading GPT-5.5 models, costing consumers $8, $20, and over $100 per month. In contrast, Anthropic's pricing structure includes a monthly fee of $17 for its Claude Pro with an annual commitment, while subscriptions to Claude Max start at $100 and above monthly.
This report on possible pricing changes emerges amid an intensifying competitive landscape between the two AI powerhouses. OpenAI recently filed for an initial public offering (IPO) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, following Anthropic's own IPO filing. Anthropic's Series H funding round was successfully closed on May 28, boasting a valuation of $965 billion, slightly surpassing OpenAI's valuation of $852 billion achieved in March.
Remarkably, ChatGPT became the first application to hit 1 billion monthly users in May, accomplishing this feat approximately three years after its launch in November 2022. This milestone outpaced Google Maps, which took around five years to reach the same user count after its inception, according to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
