In the last three months, Nvidia has invested more than $6.5 billion into companies focused on photonics technology, aiming to tackle a key hurdle in deploying AI more broadly. Photonics utilizes light to transmit data, presenting a more energy-efficient option compared to traditional electrical transmission methods. The high energy consumption associated with electrical data transfer has become a significant obstacle to the widespread adoption of AI technologies.

Since early March, Nvidia has made $2 billion in investments in Lumentum, Coherent, and Marvell, all engaged in photonics development. Moreover, the tech giant has allocated $500 million to Corning for the advancement of optical connectivity solutions and supported Ayer Labs, an optics startup, in a $500 million Series E funding round. Alvin Nguyen, a senior analyst at Forrester, remarked to CNBC that "Photonics offers Nvidia a means to expand its AI infrastructure without incurring the energy costs associated with copper and electrical systems. By backing photonics firms, Nvidia ensures ongoing advancements in this field, preventing a scalability and performance bottleneck that could arise if it continues to rely solely on traditional electricity-based methods."

Photonics technology can significantly enhance AI infrastructure by facilitating data transfer using light between graphics processing units (GPUs), memory, networking chips, servers, and data centers, moving beyond the reliance on copper-based electrical signals. Although copper currently dominates connectivity due to its affordability and reliability, the relevance of photonics is expected to grow within AI infrastructure, according to Brian Colello, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar. He noted that Nvidia's future AI solutions will necessitate increased optical connectivity to manage the surging bandwidth demands generated by new models and heightened usage.

Nvidia has already integrated some photonics technology into its networking solutions, introducing tools designed to connect millions of GPUs across various locations while significantly lowering energy consumption and operational costs. At the GTC in March, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang indicated that the company is scaling its silicon photonics technology, particularly within its ethernet networking platform for AI factories and GPU clusters. He stated that the demand for silicon photonics capacity far exceeds current global availability and that Nvidia is collaborating with its supply chain to build this capacity ahead of time.

As a result of this growing interest in photonics, stocks of companies in this sector have experienced remarkable growth. Lumentum's shares have surged by 134% year-to-date, while Coherent has seen a 96% rise. Marvell's stock has grown by 122%, and Corning's shares have increased by 111%.
