Nvidia is significantly investing in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), an artificial intelligence startup launched by Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist at OpenAI, as the chip manufacturer expands its role in the competition to advance the next generation of AI technologies.

This investment, coupled with access to Nvidia’s cutting-edge Vera Rubin computing platform, is set to dramatically enhance SSI's computational capabilities, as noted by both firms on Monday.

With this collaboration, Nvidia forms a direct alliance with one of the most anticipated AI research initiatives in the industry. SSI has mostly remained under the radar since its inception in 2024 but has successfully secured over $3 billion in funding, boasting a valuation of $32 billion. Notable investors include Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital.

For SSI, this partnership effectively addresses a significant obstacle that frontier AI companies face: the need for extensive computing resources. The startup has dedicated the past two years to pioneering a new research approach focused on developing "safe superintelligence," diverting from the industry's trend of merely creating larger models.

"We have research that merits scaling up, and access to Nvidia's advanced computing systems will enable us to do that," Sutskever mentioned.

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang remarked that the partnership was established after gaining insights into SSI’s highly confidential research.
