Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming integral to the healthcare sector, with its future effectiveness hinging on the professionals who utilize it. Recently, Incredible Health, a Black-led health tech company that maintains one of the largest AI-driven career marketplaces for healthcare professionals in the U.S., unveiled its 2026 State of Nursing Report.
This company has gained recognition as one of the few Black-led health tech startups to achieve a valuation exceeding $1 billion, as highlighted in prior coverage.
The report draws insights from a national survey of 2,240 nurses across the United States, along with data from a substantial network of 1.5 million healthcare professionals, providing a detailed overview of AI adoption in the nursing sector.
Findings reveal a dramatic increase in AI utilization among nurses, with 44% reporting its use in their work—up from just 15% the previous year. This surge underscores that nursing professionals are integrating AI into their day-to-day clinical tasks at a pace that outstrips many healthcare organizations' efforts to create supportive strategies.
Nurses are actively harnessing AI's capabilities, transitioning from testing to routine integration in their workflows. The report indicates that of the nurses using AI, 86% express satisfaction with their experiences. This technology is being utilized for time-intensive tasks, particularly documentation and charting, as well as patient education, searching for clinical data and drug references, drafting communications, and aiding in career growth. Such applications not only enhance current workflows but also allow nurses to devote more time to patient care.
Interestingly, the report suggests that familiarity with AI fosters confidence among nurses. Those who regularly engage with AI report fewer fears about job displacement compared to their counterparts with less experience. As the use of AI becomes more prevalent, discussions are shifting toward how healthcare organizations can implement it in a responsible and effective manner.
However, despite the swift uptake by nurses, many healthcare organizations have not yet laid the groundwork necessary for integrating AI.
A mere 8% of nurses reported that their employers had communicated a clear AI strategy relevant to their roles. Even among those organizations with existing AI tools, only 17% felt that a coherent strategy was in place. Alarmingly, one in five nurses noted that AI technologies were introduced without adequate guidance on how to incorporate them into clinical practice.
Training gaps also present a significant challenge. Nearly 50% of nurses disclosed they hadn't received any AI training in the last year, even with broader access to AI tools. Furthermore, nurses are seldom consulted in the selection of the technologies they ultimately employ; those who do participate tend to have greater trust and engagement with AI in their daily tasks.
The findings indicate an implementation disconnect. While healthcare organizations are investing in AI, the efficacy of these investments will ultimately hinge on effective communication, governance, workforce engagement, and education.
Simply adopting AI tools isn't sufficient for achieving better results.
The report shows that almost half of the nurses who used AI noted little to no time savings during their recent applications of the technology. This indicates that merely providing access to AI doesn’t guarantee enhanced efficiency or productivity.
Training emerges as a critical factor for success. Nurses who received education on AI were significantly more likely to experience meaningful time savings compared to those who didn’t. Regular users also exhibited greater confidence in AI outputs and expressed fewer concerns about the long-term implications of AI on their profession.
For healthcare leaders, the report emphasizes a crucial insight: AI implementation should be viewed through the dual lens of technology and workforce initiatives.
Organizations that establish definitive strategies, invest in comprehensive training, and engage frontline clinicians in the decision-making process for implementation will be better placed to enhance productivity while also supporting the healthcare professionals who provide patient care.
