After more than two years of preparation, Netflix is set to launch its newest reality competition series, The Golden Ticket. This Willy Wonka-inspired show will debut on September 23, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, which featured Gene Wilder in the iconic role.
In an intriguing development, Netflix plans to use artificial intelligence to recreate Wilder’s voice for the series. This decision has sparked discussions around the ethics of AI technology. The voice replication was completed with the approval of the Wilder Estate, whose representative, Karen B. Wilder, expressed her excitement about connecting her late husband’s “magic” to a new audience.
Reports suggest that Netflix collaborated with ElevenLabs, a prominent AI audio firm backed by investors like Matthew McConaughey, to achieve this voice recreation. ElevenLabs has recently demonstrated its capabilities by replicating Michael Caine’s voice for an audiobook and has also worked with the Stan Lee Estate to craft the late creator’s voice.
Additionally, the series will feature Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa Loompa in the 1971 film, returning to his role in this unscripted format.
The Golden Ticket will bring together twelve contestants, each accompanied by a chosen partner, as they enter Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The participants will encounter a variety of challenges that test their physical abilities, mental resilience, and moral judgment, all leading to a chance to win a “life-changing prize.”
A two-part finale is scheduled to air on September 30.
The show comes on the heels of a competitive selection process in which multiple production companies sought the opportunity to create this adaptation. In May 2024, it was reported that Netflix had initiated a bake-off involving numerous production firms, including Fremantle, Wall to Wall, Nobody’s Hero, The Garden, and ultimately Eureka Productions, known for their work on Fox’s The Floor.
Filming for the nine-part series took place in the Gold Coast, Australia, with the backing of the local government. Executive producers for the project include Chris Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Rikkie Proost, David Tibballs, Alison Holloway, and Emer Harkin.
Karen B. Wilder remarked on behalf of the Gene Wilder Estate, “Over fifty years after Gene brought Willy Wonka to life, audiences of all ages continue to find joy, laughter, and inspiration in his portrayal. Gene had a unique ability to infuse humor, wonder, and heart into the lives of others, creating a lasting connection across generations. We are thrilled that The Golden Ticket honors the warmth and creativity he brought to the role, introducing that enchantment to a new generation while celebrating the fans who have cherished it for many years.”
