A24 has reportedly screened the film, yet its potential interest in the project remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Mubi is also exploring the possibility of picking it up.

Attempts to reach Focus, Netflix, and A24 for comments were unsuccessful. Additionally, Mubi and Neon have not responded to inquiries from The Hollywood Reporter regarding their interest in the film.

On Friday, Amazon MGM Studios announced its decision not to release the movie, which stars Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, generating notable buzz. 

An Amazon spokesperson expressed, “We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue. We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”

Reports from Puck indicate that Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM Studios, was responsible for the decision and communicated it to Guadagnino and the film’s producers. This decision comes shortly after news surfaced that Amazon plans to invest $50 billion in OpenAI as part of a multi-year partnership.

Artificial has been described as a film reminiscent of The Social Network, focusing on a chaotic period in 2023 where Altman was both fired and rehired by OpenAI amidst AI safety concerns and allegations of misconduct. Alongside Garfield and Barinholtz, the movie features notable performances from breakout star Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, one of the co-founders of OpenAI who reportedly spearheaded Altman's ousting, as well as Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, Mark Rylance, and others.

Initial test screenings for Artificial have been well-received, according to Puck, although its portrayals of Altman and Musk are not entirely flattering.

Last year, Altman was a distinguished attendee at Jeff Bezos' lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice. 

Amazon MGM has previously worked with Guadagnino on films like After the Hunt and Challengers, while MGM and Amazon separately distributed both Bones and All and Suspiria. Other studios that have released Guadagnino’s films include Sony Pictures Classics for Call Me by Your Name and A24 for Queer.

Meanwhile, A24 is said to have screened the film but its standing in the race to acquire the Sam Altman–OpenAI comedic drama remains unclear.

Sources are saying that Mubi is looking at the project.

Focus, Netflix and A24 could not be reached for comment. Additionally, fellow indies Mubi and Neon have not yet responded to THR‘s requests for comment following a report they were pursuing the film.

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed Friday that it would not be releasing the movie, the casting for which — Andrew Garfield as Altman and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk — has already made headlines.

“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” a spokesperson for Amazon told THR.

Reports, originating in Puck on Friday, said the decision came from Amazon MGM Studios boss Mike Hopkins, who relayed the news to Guadagnino and the film’s producers. The move, as Guadagnino is said to have almost completed work on the film, comes just a few months after news broke that Amazon would invest $50 billion in OpenAI as part of a multi-year strategic partnership.

The film has been described as a Social Network-esque feature that covers the tumultuous 2023 period in which Altman, amid AI safety concerns and reports of abusive behavior, was fired and rehired by OpenAI within a matter of days. The cast also includes Anora breakout Yura Borisov as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who reportedly led the movement to get rid of Altman, as well as Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Hoffman, Mark Rylance, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Chris O’Dowd, Will Angus, Thaddea Graham, Nicholas Hamilton, Angus Imrie and Will Price.

Test screenings of Artificial have received a “warm reception,” Puck reported, but the movie’s depictions of Altman and Musk are not seen as entirely flattering.

Maximizing the utility of such models often requires relinquishing control, which can be daunting for those hesitant about AI or protective of their personal data. For Andrew Ambrosino, the lead engineer of OpenAI’s desktop application, embracing this level of access is crucial for innovation; his app has full access to his inbox, Slack, Notion, Figma, and more.

“If I'm requesting it to draft a document, there's always a chance it could reference a private message related to that document without recognizing that it shouldn't disclose specific details. Yes, that risk exists,” Ambrosino explained to TechCrunch. “I’m willing to face personal risks when necessary, but fortunately, I haven't encountered significant issues.”

Ambrosino is currently focused on OpenAI's ambitious ChatGPT Work initiative, launched last month, which can be accessed through the company’s entry-level $20 monthly subscription. Designed for white-collar professionals, it connects LLMs to the automated workflows of diverse fields such as finance, healthcare, and accounting.

OpenAI's promotional material encapsulates this vision: a future where artificial intelligence transcends mere question-answering, enabling users to transform their grandest ideas into tangible outcomes.

While the integration of AI tools has been steadily advancing in software development, wider adoption across other professional domains has been slower. ChatGPT Work, built upon the Codex coding model, aims to equip non-engineers with the powerful capabilities that software developers have accessed from agents — allowing AI to independently complete complex tasks rather than just respond to queries.

Thibault Sottiaux, who heads OpenAI's core product development, described the potential: “In this new paradigm, ChatGPT can autonomously tackle complex projects, providing an experience that is both enjoyable and secure. This aligns with OpenAI’s mission to democratize technology.”

From a commercial perspective, this transition is critical. Agents that perform tasks over extended periods generate more tokens, enhancing profitability on a per-user basis. Expanding into new job roles is essential, not just for OpenAI but for the entire AI industry. While AI-focused on programming has proven lucrative, it only represents a fraction of the broader professional landscape, necessitating advancements beyond traditionally lucrative coding applications. Competitors like Harvey (aimed at legal professionals) and Clay (centered on sales) are also vying for similar user segments, adopting a model-agnostic strategy to leverage the most effective AI solutions available.

Analysts highlight this as a significant hurdle for OpenAI and its counterparts. “If AI research labs fail to quickly acquire the necessary complementary assets for scaling in various markets, the value will shift elsewhere,” cautioned Christian Catalini in a16z’s “It’s time to build” blog.

To make AI applications user-friendly for those outside the programming realm, OpenAI’s non-technical teams began implementing Codex “during a period when it was rather unwelcoming to them—prompting queries about coding and displaying technical outputs like an empty diff for changes,” Ambrosino noted. “Thus, we initiated a shift toward a more general-purpose model from February until now.”

An internal study backed by OpenAI revealed that while 98% of its employees utilized Codex, only 17% of organizational subscribers and fewer than 1% of individual users engaged with the agent-based coding tool. This discrepancy between the almost universal internal adoption and minimal external usage illuminates both a challenge and an opportunity for the company.

“The more value we create for our users, the more they are inclined to pay for a portion of that value, and that’s fundamentally how we view ChatGPT,” Sottiaux stated. “When you use it, the compelling benefits make paying $20 a month feel justified.”

Understanding the disconnect requires insight into OpenAI’s engineering approaches. Each LLM necessitates what is termed a “harness”—the software interface surrounding a model that filters information, dictates tool usage, and formats responses for users.

If the ambition is to enable the model to carry out tasks autonomously, this harness must equip it with the necessary tools and directives for comprehensive projects. While developers find command-line interfaces (CLIs) effective for LLM-based coding, the average user prefers more intuitive, user-friendly designs.

“You need a solution that interacts seamlessly with your chaotic digital life and older tools,” Ambrosino told TechCrunch. The aim is to make AI capabilities more accessible through tools that simplify complex interactions.

Applications like Claude Code and Codex have initiated a “vibe coding” revolution by removing the complexity of writing actual code, letting users articulate their needs to the model. OpenAI aims to streamline the functionality found in advanced tools like OpenClaw, making them accessible via simple prompts.

“Without these solutions in front of the model, experts might achieve the desired outcomes, but mass adoption would remain elusive,” Ambrosino explained. The ongoing debate within OpenAI highlights a tension between what power users require and the needs of mainstream users.

As for ChatGPT Work, it offers additional capabilities for selecting projects and integrating plugins, all while adhering to the same user-friendly interface ethos as other OpenAI services. Ambrosino compared this evolution to skeuomorphism—when digital tools mimic physical counterparts. “This wasn’t merely design fluff; it helped users acclimatize to the transition,” he remarked.

While OpenAI has yet to disclose specific usage statistics for Work in comparison to Codex, the app is currently utilized by around 20 million users, a stark contrast to the more than a billion users engaging with ChatGPT online.

OpenAI has positioned ChatGPT Work as an optimal solution for routine, data-heavy coordination tasks. Its employees are using it for weekly metrics reports and transforming spreadsheets into planning documents.

I’ve interacted with venture capitalists using such agents for assembling analytical notes and investment documents, while operations teams are crafting tailored dashboards and visualizations. Even Sam Altman has been using it to streamline vacation planning. One OpenAI engineer described how he used the program to analyze a Slack conversation about a technical challenge and receive insightful data visualizations in return.

“There’s an overwhelming amount of information at our disposal as employees,” said Akshay Nathan, who leads product engineering at OpenAI. “The challenge lies in effectively sifting through this information and taking actionable steps based on it. Much of this data exists across various platforms, and that’s where ChatGPT shines, unlocking access to it all.”

This performance could represent the digital personal assistant many AI enthusiasts have envisioned. Like other agents such as Claude Cowork and Perplexity AI, ChatGPT Work integrates seamlessly into your existing digital workspace—email, browsers, and various SaaS solutions—and leverages context effectively.

In practice, its capabilities can be impressive: I tasked ChatGPT Work with retrieving an oddly formatted preschool calendar from my email and inserting it into my Google Calendar, saving me from mundane data entry. I’d rather not forget school events or miss out on arranging childcare during vacations.

Though I was initially hesitant to trust OpenAI with sensitive access to my emails, interviews, or drafts (AI critics can breathe easy), I found it could indeed be more beneficial with greater trust. I also requested it process financial data on publicly traded firms, leading to an auto-generating dashboard that tracked key metrics, something I used to do manually with Python scripts. It even sends me weekly academic updates on new AI research.

However, the challenge lies in making the tool intuitive to set up. Configuring permissions for agents to access cloud drives proved confusing, with multiple attempts required for something as simple as read-only access, often met with cryptic error messages. The model wasn’t particularly helpful, but eventually, a mobile app prompt clarified that only complete access would allow it to function properly.

Many essential features are only accessible via the web app, necessitating a simultaneous use of both platforms. Occasionally, ChatGPT Work's limitations can be perplexing—it can create events linked to your Google Calendar but can’t generate new calendars. And using it for low-effort tasks can yield frustrating results, akin to dealing with a less capable intern.

Such feedback from early adopters indicates a concern that overly complex setups may discourage new users. Joe Gershenson, the engineering lead for OpenAI’s harness, acknowledged that refining the effort settings for new users is essential, assuring, “We are continually working to improve how users find the right balance in reasoning.”

OpenAI faces additional hurdles in penetrating mainstream white-collar roles; many workflows lack the clear measurability inherent in code. Software either functions or doesn’t, highlighting an apparent gap in identifying the nuances of efficiency in business presentations, strategy, or sales tactics.

“Designing for a hugely versatile product like this comes with its unique challenges,” Ambrosino remarked. When I pressed for specifics on targeted workflows, engineers expressed hesitation, suggesting this inquiry would best suit OpenAI's research team.

Later, OpenAI clarified that they draw on their GDPval benchmark—which encompasses 44 occupations and various knowledge work assessments—and supplement this with user input. An unofficial insight is that feedback also comes directly from OpenAI employees. Ambrosino noted, “We must continually evaluate if we're developing workflows relevant to broader audiences or overly specialized based on our own experiences.”

As the user base grows, valuable insights derived from actual usage patterns could yield significant data, following in the footsteps of coding tool successes, assuming users opt to share their data for further training (a choice I did not make).

Regarding competitive dynamics, despite frequent discussions about interfaces, OpenAI's engineers appeared hesitant to comment on how their products stack up against Claude Cowork and similar offerings designed for mass audiences.

“The truth is, I don't focus on what others are developing,” Gershenson remarked. “I honestly do not think about our competitors at all.”

This skepticism is understandable considering the apparent similarities in user interfaces across platforms and the natural competitive intelligence intrinsic to business. Notably, the first action from ChatGPT Work was to prompt me to migrate my Claude Cowork data.

The intense competition could be traced partly to Claude Code's pioneering role in AI-driven programming, reshaping how software developers engage in their craft. This rivalry is heightened by the fact that OpenAI, which had conceptualized a similar tool first, did not execute it optimally.

In the initial rollout of Codex as a web application, engineers perhaps became overly confident about the model's capabilities to autonomously manage tasks with minimal user interaction. Conversely, Claude Code was designed for an interactive user experience, encouraging more thorough dialogue and feedback throughout the process.

Anthropic's strategy, although more labor-intensive for users, proved effective. “Our product was slightly ahead of its time, an ambitious approach too early for the model and harness we had available,” noted Ambrosino.

OpenAI has since adapted, integrating more opportunities for user interaction within the model. The current iteration of Codex, now available as desktop and mobile applications, appears to be gaining traction, showing increasing interest in April, with positive survey findings suggested for enterprise adoption.

Part of this momentum can be attributed to refining product-market fit and addressing safety concerns surrounding Anthropic’s models. OpenAI continues pushing toward more user-centric systems, which is exemplified in the development of ChatGPT Work. The engineers I spoke with emphasized their robust model and efficient pricing as the key differentiators.

“While it may be frustrating, often the core distinction lies in the model itself. We have prioritized leveraging our latest, most powerful, and cost-effective technologies within this application,” Ambrosino concluded.

This perspective aligns with the “bitter lesson” from AI research, underscoring that a superior, more generalized model is often more valuable than specialized experiences. For advocates of AI, the harness is perceived as a temporary support structure rather than a competitive barrier.

“Short-term gains can be had by including numerous features and conditions, but the reality is that the next wave of models will render them obsolete in a matter of months,” Gershenson remarked. His team aims for a straightforward design that empowers the model with the necessary context while avoiding unnecessary additions.

The pressing question remains whether the average user or model can navigate this complexity. Professor Ethan Mollick from the Wharton School of Business, who studies AI in workplace environments, views Claude as the more user-friendly choice, stating that “ChatGPT often aims for a seamless experience, attempting to handle everything for you, whereas Claude engages in a more interactive process with numerous comparison options.”

Sottiaux and the broader OpenAI team maintain a different perspective, asserting that their conversational interface is more effective than merely learning applications. “We are confident that the market is primed for this approach,” he remarked, vindicating the substantial user uptake.

Nevertheless, whether a model-specific harness is optimal for maximizing performance remains uncertain. Studies within organizations like Composio and Databricks indicate that various combinations of harnesses and models exhibit differing efficiencies in coding benchmarks. Evidence shows tools like Pi, developed by Earendil, outperforming Codex with the same underlying model.

Zechner, the creator of Pi, suggests that his minimalist harness successfully demonstrates the viability of an AGI-centric model, especially for coding tasks. He points out that while it lacks explicit features, its capacity to adapt and create interfaces compensates for the absence of traditional structures. He acknowledged the challenges OpenAI faces in appealing to a broader audience beyond technical professionals.

“All AI solutions are shaped by coding tasks because that is where training data is concentrated,” he contended. “For roles like management, decision impacts unfold over extended timelines, making it difficult to track progress through traditional feedback loops.”

Similar to other open-source avenues, he criticized large AI organizations for working to secure a user base through proprietary harness solutions, warning that reliance on their stack risks reducing them to mere model providers in competition with alternative sources.

Technical professionals have also noted that the insights gained from evaluating token usage and agent behavior in cutting-edge harnesses are significantly constrained. While this presents limited implications for non-technical users, successfully achieving widespread adoption will eventually necessitate deliberate discussions around operational costs.

For instance, casually exploring the tool via a $20 monthly subscription, I managed to utilize more than 80 million tokens in a span of just four days, which translated to over $65 in costs based on the model’s assessment (without a comprehensive usage dashboard within the app). This highlights a substantial subsidy far exceeding the subscription rate even during casual use.

“We are consistently striving to enhance efficiency,” Sottiaux said, referencing an upcoming 80% cost reduction for users leveraging OpenAI's Luna model. “If you check back six months from now, we anticipate you will be able to achieve the same functionalities at significantly lower costs.”

An additional pertinent inquiry involves whether the configuration and dependence on applications generates a lock-in effect through data retention or the meticulous nature of configuring access permissions across plugins.

During my visit to OpenAI's headquarters, marked by a calm yet slightly tense atmosphere, the urgency among the engineers was palpable; there’s considerable work to accomplish. As we spoke, Nathan, who oversees the product engineering team, highlighted that the objective remains the promise of a magical, all-in-one solution, while also acknowledging that the complexity still exceeds expectations. “I remain hopeful that we can resolve these challenges, ensuring a truly AI-native experience.”

How much control are you willing to give an LLM over your digital life?

Getting the most value from a model means giving it the keys. For a control freak or the AI-hesitant, it seems like a lot. For Andrew Ambrosino, the lead engineer for OpenAI’s desktop app, it’s the only way to test the future, which is why that app now has access to, and control over, his inbox, his Slack account, his phone, apps like Notion and Figma, and more.

“If I’m asking it to write a document, is there a possibility that it’s going to pull from a private DM on that subject and not know that it’s not supposed to share some info? Yes,” Ambrosino told TechCrunch. “I’ll do it for the job. I will take the personal hit here and there if I have to. And I haven’t had to.”

Ambrosino works on OpenAI’s biggest bet, ChatGPT Work, which was released last month and is available on the company’s lowest subscription tier, for $20 a month. The product is intended to allow white-collar workers to field AI agents — hooking LLMs up to the digital workflows used by accountants, investors, doctors, and everyone else whose day-to-day is dominated by their computer.

OpenAI’s marketing copy puts the goal succinctly: A world where “where [artificial] intelligence goes beyond answering questions to helping everyone turn their biggest ideas into reality.”

For software developers, that shift is already happening, but it’s been slow to spread to other departments. ChatGPT Work is a modified version of the company’s Codex coding tool. It’s meant to give non-engineers a version of the same functionality that software engineers already get from agents: an AI tool that doesn’t just answer questions, but completes multistep projects on its own.

“In this new factor, ChatGPT can actually do entire, very complicated tasks for you all autonomously in a way that is delightful and safe,” Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product work, including Work, told TechCrunch. “It’s the very mission of OpenAI — to bring everyone along.”

Commercially, that matters a lot. Agents that work for longer stretches burn through more tokens, which makes them more lucrative for OpenAI on a per-user basis. Reaching new professions is crucial — not just for OpenAI, but for the industry at large. If coding has proven lucrative territory for AI labs, it’s still a tiny subset of the professional work AI tools need to enable if these companies are to justify their massive investment in training and computation. While labs have been focused on software engineers, vertical-specific competitors like Harvey (for law) and Clay (for sales) have been chasing those customers with a model-agnostic approach, meaning they’ll plug in whichever AI works best at the time.

Industry analysts see this as one of the major challenges facing OpenAI and its competitors. “If the labs cannot rapidly get ahold of the key complementary assets needed to scale AI in the market, value will accrue elsewhere,” Christian Catalini wrote on a16z’s “It’s time to build” blog.

Making the AI apps work for people who aren’t software engineers requires more hand-holding. OpenAI’s non-engineering workforce, like the communications and finance teams, started using Codex “at a time that it was actively hostile to them—asking them about code and showing them, ‘oh, you have an empty diff for this thing,’” Ambrosino said, referring to a technical readout meant for software changes. “So, we started to make it more general purpose between February and now.”

An OpenAI-backed study found that in June, 98% of OpenAI employees were using Codex, but just 17% of organizational subscribers and less than 1% of individual subscribers were using the agentic coding tool. That difference between near total adoption inside the company and negligible adoption outside it is the challenge and opportunity for the company.



“The more value and the more utility that we generate for users, the more they will be willing to also pay for some part of that utility, and that’s how we’ve always seen ChatGPT as well,” Sottiaux said. “You sit there and you’re like, ’of course I want to pay $20 bucks a month for this,’ because the value that you get is so much more.”

How to make AI intuitive

To understand that disconnect, it helps to understand what OpenAI’s engineers are building. Every LLM requires what engineers call a “harness” — the software wrapped around a model that decides what information it sees, which tools it can use, and how it presents its answers back to you.

If you want that model to do stuff — to become an agent — the harness gives it tools and instructions for using them on long-term tasks. For developers, a command-line interface (CLI) that enabled LLMs to code was enough to change the way software was built and deployed. But most people aren’t using CLIs; there’s a reason Windows replaced DOS.

An agentic product that goes beyond software engineering is “going to be something that plays with the messy world of your life and your tools and websites that were built in 1995 and never updated,” Ambrosino told TechCrunch, explaining that the experiences his team is building are vital to expanding access to useful AI.

Consider apps like Claude Code and Codex: They unleashed “vibe coding” by abstracting away all the actual software writing, and letting users just tell the model what they want in a program. Now, OpenAI wants to make functionality found in tools like OpenClaw, which coders use to put LLMs to work, as easy as prompting.

“Without these products in front of the model, experts would know how to get the same results, but you wouldn’t get to a billion people using the thing,” Ambrosino said. That trade-off between what power users need and what mainstream adoption requires plays out in internal debates at OpenAI, where some employees argue that a button is unnecessary if users can just ask the model directly.

“We push back on [that] — because it’s very early,” Ambrosino said. “Discoverability matters in this phase, and at some point we won’t have the button.”

Work has a few more buttons for selecting projects and plug-ins, but it aims for the same magic box interface as other OpenAI products. He compares it to skeuomorphism, the fading practice of making digital tools look like the physical objects they replaced, like a calculator app made to look like a pocket calculator. “That stuff wasn’t just cringe design. That actually helped get people into this [and] make the transition,” Ambrosino said.

OpenAI wouldn’t say how many people used Work versus Codex, but the joint app is used by just 20 million people, compared to more than a billion users the company says are prompting ChatGPT online.

Giving ChatGPT a license to skill

For now, OpenAI is pitching this tool as best suited for routine, data-intensive coordination tasks. Its employees are setting up weekly metrics reports, for example, and making spreadsheets into planning tools.

I’ve spoken to VCs using agents to assemble relevant communications and analysis about companies into investment memos, and ops teams spinning up bespoke dashboards and data visualizations. Sam Altman is using it to plan his vacations. One OpenAI engineer described asking the program to look at a Slack conversation about an engineering problem and “make some charts,” then receiving back a series of insightful plots.

“There is a deluge of information for the average worker or employee of any of these companies, including myself,” Akshay Nathan, who leads the product engineering team at OpenAI, said. “We’re actually quite limited by our ability to parse everything that’s available to us, and then take action on it. That information lives in all these system records tools [like, Salesforce]…the value of ChatGPT is you already have access to this, but now you truly have access to it.”

This, then, could be the digital personal assistant that AI evangelists dream about. As with Claude Cowork or Perplexity AI browsing agent, ChatGPT Work links agents to your existing workspace — email, web browser, a slew of SaaS platforms — and puts that context to work for you.

When the system works, it can be impressive: I asked ChatGPT Work to get my son’s weirdly-formatted preschool calendar out of my email and put it into my Google Calendar, and it did, saving me a lot of repetitive data entry. Hopefully now I won’t forget the school potluck or fail to arrange vacation childcare.

I didn’t trust OpenAI with access to my inbox, source interviews, or story drafts (fear not, AI haters) and wouldn’t let it have access to my bank account, but I believe it would be more useful had I the faith. I tasked it to do financial analysis on publicly traded companies that I cover, and it delivered an auto-updating dashboard of metrics for me; it made a queryable database of space launches, a task I’d previously had to accomplish by writing Python scripts. It also sends me a weekly email about new AI research posted at academic clearinghouses. I’ll keep experimenting with it.

While asking the model for something is intuitive, giving it what it needs to take action isn’t as simple. Setting up the permissions for agents to access, say, a cloud drive was confusing and circular — I tried multiple times to give it just “read” access and received error messages. The model itself wasn’t too helpful, but eventually on the mobile app, a dialog box popped up to tell me that only complete access would make it work.

Many important settings are only available on the web app, so I frequently found myself working in both at the same time. Sometimes ChatGPT Work’s limitations are baffling — link it to your Google calendar and it can create events, but not new calendars. And don’t bother trying to do anything unless the effort level is high, otherwise you’ve got the worst intern you’ve ever worked with.

That’s common advice from AI early adopters, who fear that frustrated newbies will give up. Joe Gershenson, the engineering lead for OpenAI’s harness, admitted that effort settings aren’t intuitive for new users yet — ”there are things that we can do better to help them get the right level of reasoning…” he said, adding, “Watch this space.”

OpenAI faces another important challenge breaking into normie white-collar work: Most workflows aren’t as measurable — or evaluable — as code. Software either works or it doesn’t, and even that distinction reduces the nuance about what makes code good or bad. A good presentation, business strategy, or sales pitch isn’t as easy to evaluate or trace.

“One of the unique challenges with a product like this is just that it can really do anything,” Ambrosino said. When I asked which specific problems the team designs around, and which workflows it targets, the engineers I spoke with demurred, saying that was a question for OpenAI’s research team.

OpenAI later provided an answer, telling TechCrunch that it uses its benchmark GDPval, drawn from 44 occupations and hundreds of knowledge work tests, and supplements that with user feedback. A less official answer is that it comes from OpenAI employees themselves. Said Ambrosino, “We have to always parse out … are we doing the workflow that everybody else will be doing, or are we weird?”

The early adopters of the app itself will create valuable traces with their actual usage — much of the success of coding tools is built on similar data collection — assuming they don’t opt out of making it available for training. (I did).

The rivalry that drove OpenAI’s product design

Despite all the attention on the model interface, OpenAI’s engineers were reluctant to answer a fairly simple question: What sets Codex and ChatGPT Work apart from Claude Cowork, or other competing agentic harnesses intended for a mass user base?



“It’s going to be a really disappointing answer for you, and I’m sorry, but the honest answer is that I really don’t look at the harnesses that they’re building,” Gershenson said in a typical answer. “The Mad Men ‘I don’t think about you at all’ meme comes to mind here.”

Frankly, I don’t believe them, if only based on the extreme similarities between the products’ user interfaces, the need for competitive intelligence at any business, and because the first thing ChatGPT Work asked me to do when I started it up was port over my Claude Cowork data.

It’s understandable if Claude Code is a sensitive topic around the OpenAI offices. Their corporate rival defined the market for AI coding and launched a revolution in how software engineers do their jobs. It’s additionally frustrating because OpenAI had the idea first, but didn’t quite harness it correctly.

When OpenAI first developed Codex as a web app, the engineers got a bit over their skis — or, as Ambrosino puts it, “a bit more AGI-pilled.” In short, they bet on the model being smart enough to handle a task entirely on its own, with minimal user input.

Built shortly afterward, Claude Code was oriented around a back-and-forth conversation with the user. If you gave it a problem, it would survey the possibilities and give you three or four options for proceeding. Once you chose, it would go a little further and then check back again, giving continual updates and leaving less room for the model and harness to make mistakes.

Anthropic’s approach proved more effective, even if it demanded more work from users. “[Our] product was a little ahead of where the model and harness was at the time,” Ambrosino says now.

OpenAI eventually followed suit by adding more opportunities for users to interact with the model. That became the Codex we know today, with desktop and mobile apps. Using download statistics as a proxy for interest in the programs, Claude Code was more in demand until April of this year, but now Codex has taken a slight lead; surveys of enterprise use also suggest OpenAI is catching up.

Part of that lead is getting the product-market fit right, and part comes from complaints about safety restrictions on Anthropic’s models and compute shortages. OpenAI’s steps toward more human-centric harness continue with ChatGPT Work, but the engineers I spoke to insisted the key differentiator is the strength of OpenAI’s latest powerful and cost-effective models.

“The frustrating answer is that a lot of times it is the model, and one thing that we have tried to do really well with this app is fully leverage the model,” Ambrosino said.

What makes a good harness, anyway?

That explanation returns to the “bitter lesson” learned by AI researchers that a better general model is more important than specific domain experience. For true believers, the harness is a temporary crutch, not the moat.

“You could get good results in the short term by adding a whole bunch of extras — if and thens and tools — but like, come on, the next model is going to come out in a couple of months and make that obsolete,” Gershenson told TechCrunch. His team focuses on the simplest ways to expose the model to the tools and context it needs — and no more.

“The goal of good harness engineering is to… be more precise about what information the model really needs to solve your problem, because the models are getting better and better at doing that if you simply let them do their thing,” Gershenson said.

There is an open question, though, if most people or models are ready for that. Ethan Mollick, the Wharton School of Business professor who studies AI tools in the workplace, still sees Claude as more user-friendly, writing that “ChatGPT tends to want to do magic & just do it for you, while Claude does comparisons & shows them, repeatedly asking for input & feedback and doing A & B tests.”

Sottiaux, and perhaps OpenAI at large, disagree, arguing that the conversational nature of the app is better than learning how to use an application. “We definitely see that the world seems to be ready,” he says of the app. ”This is why we’ve had incredible adoption.”

Still, it’s not clear that a model-specific harness is even the right bet for maximizing a model. Comparisons run by companies like Composio and Databricks show that different harness and model combinations deliver different performance on coding benchmarks. Databricks found that Pi, an open source harness published by the software company Earendil, outperformed Codex while using the same GPT 5.5 model. Pi has been used to build projects like OpenClaw and Cloudflare OS.

Pi’s creator, Mario Zechner, says his intentionally minimalist harness is evidence that an AGI-pilled approach can work, at least for software engineers and coding tasks. What it lacks in explicit features, he says, is made up for by its ability to modify itself and build its own interfaces. He sympathizes with the challenge that OpenAI’s engineers face in expanding their user base beyond engineers.

“Everything is coding agent shaped…the reason is that they only have training data for coding agent tasks,” he told TechCrunch. “Say I’m in management, I make a decision today, and the outcome happens months later. You cannot capture that in a simple trace of a user and agent back and forth, so all of these kinds of tasks and anything that you don’t digitize is inaccessible to a model to learn.”

Like other open source providers, he sees the big lab’s effort to push their harnesses as a way to lock-in users; ”They need to own the entire stack; otherwise, they just become a model provider and then need to compete with Chinese models.”

He and other engineers TechCrunch spoke to felt that the insight into token spend and agent behavior in frontier labs’ harnesses is too limited. In a sense, that’s less meaningful to non-technical workers, but as with the coding tools, uptake at the scale OpenAI hopes for will eventually force harder conversations about cost.

For example, messing around on a $20-a-month subscription, I used more than 80 million tokens in four days, which cost $65, according to the model’s analysis (there’s no dashboard in the app). That’s a subsidy of more than 3x the subscription price for four days of casual use alone.

“We are working every day to push the frontier on efficiency,” Sottiaux said, pointing to a recent 80% price cut for users of OpenAI’s Luna model. “If you wake up six months from now, you should be able to do all of the same [tasks] with less spend.”

The other relevant question is whether these apps create a lock-in effect on customers through data retention, or the sheer pain of configuring access to all the plug-ins and their permissions.

Inside OpenAI’s wood-paneled, plant-filled headquarters, which I visited in July, the atmosphere was calm but slightly tense; these are people with a lot to do. The engineers I spoke with were constantly monitoring their laptops as we talked, and rushing from meeting room to meeting room.

Nathan, the head of the product engineering team, said the focus remains on “the promise of the magic box, but I still think there’s too much complexity…I’m very optimistic that we can solve it, with the model and in a truly AI-native way.”

OpenAI is building AI agents for everything. Will everyone use them?

Additionally, OpenAI seeks a more robust cybersecurity framework throughout the development of AI models, aimed at ensuring that these systems do not undermine their internal protections.

To provide context, SB 53 was already a substantial legislative achievement at the time of its enactment. The law requires major frontier AI developers to disclose their safety protocols, establishes an official mechanism for reporting critical safety incidents to California's Office of Emergency Services, protects individuals who report issues, and empowers the state Attorney General to impose civil penalties on non-compliant companies.

The legislation also established CalCompute, a public computing consortium designed to enhance safety and equity research, and mandates an annual review of the law as technology evolves. At the time of its introduction, Newsom emphasized that it demonstrated California's ability to safeguard the public while allowing the AI industry—integral to the state's economy—to thrive. The law was also seen as a necessary stopgap in the absence of comprehensive federal AI regulations.

Given the current political climate, OpenAI has dubbed its approach "reverse federalism." This emphasizes that while Congress delays in passing comprehensive AI legislation, individual states can proactively establish compatible safety standards, which may eventually inform national policy.

OpenAI has framed its request as a proactive measure rather than a reaction to specific incidents, clarifying that it aims to create a framework that addresses potential issues early on and promotes the sharing of lessons learned across the industry. While these propositions are constructive, they also strategically position OpenAI to influence the development of such standards.

It’s worth noting that Ziff Davis, the parent company of Mashable, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, claiming that the company infringed upon its copyrights while training and operating its AI systems.

OpenAI wants California to toughen up the AI safety law it helped get across the finish line less than a year ago.

In a post from OpenAI's Global Affairs team on LinkedIn, the company laid out its case for amending SB 53, the Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law back in Sept. 2025. OpenAI says the law needs new teeth, specifically, requirements that frontier AI models be monitored during training or evaluation for signs that they could bypass a third party's security controls or obtain confidential information they shouldn't have.

The company is also pushing for beefed-up cybersecurity across the entire model development process, aimed at preventing AI systems from circumventing their internal safeguards.

It makes sense, then, that OpenAI is calling its broader strategy "reverse federalism" — the idea being that while Congress continues to sit on its hands on comprehensive AI legislation, states can move first on compatible safety standards that can eventually be turned into national policy.

The company was careful to frame this as forward-looking rather than reactive, insisting that the ask isn't "to write rules for one particular incident" but to build a framework that catches problems earlier and ensures lessons are shared industry-wide. Such demands are all well and good, and one that conveniently keeps OpenAI in the room to shape what those standards look like.

On August 12, it was announced that the Los Angeles Lakers, a prominent NBA franchise, will be sold for an unprecedented $12.5 billion to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner. However, Kushner’s excitement was directed elsewhere on his X account, where he highlighted a different achievement: his company, Thrive Holdings, which he established in 2025 to integrate AI into service firms, had secured $2 billion in funding from investors including SoftBank, reaching the same $12.5 billion valuation as the Lakers.

"It's a remarkable time for innovation," he expressed, neglecting to mention the Lakers, a team whose fame transcends such omissions.

This summer has been quite significant for Kushner. Renowned in tech circles for his venture capital firm Thrive Capital, which has made early investments in high-profile companies like Instagram and Spotify, he has recently transitioned from a low-profile investor to a bolstering figure. He was spotted at the lavish wedding of Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce, held at Madison Square Garden, alongside supermodel spouse Karlie Kloss. Shortly afterward, he attended the exclusive Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, where he was photographed with OpenAI president Greg Brockman.

On the business front, Kushner had a notable victory when SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, went public in June, causing Thrive's investments in the aerospace company to soar to about $10 billion. Just days later, SpaceX revealed a $60 billion acquisition of AI startup Cursor, further boosting Thrive's valuation by $4.2 billion. July brought complications, however, when a contentious attempt to purchase a stake in the FIFA World Cup at a projected $20 billion valuation fell apart only three days after being announced.

More recently, on the heels of the Lakers transaction news, Jeanie Buss, the controlling governor of the NBA team, indicated through her attorney that she had not reached an agreement with her siblings to sell their collective 17.8% stake in the Lakers, potentially jeopardizing the high-value deal.

Kushner's wealth continues to surge—Forbes currently estimates his net worth at $16.7 billion, a significant jump from $5.2 billion just a year prior, thanks to the growing assets of Thrive and its new portfolio valuation. This figure does not factor in the value of his impending Lakers stake, which remains uncertain until the sale is finalized. He also holds a minority interest in the Miami Heat, valued at around $80 million, which he must relinquish for the Lakers acquisition to be completed. A spokesperson for Kushner did not provide any comments on these developments.

This financial ascent makes Kushner's wealth nearly 17 times that of his brother Jared, who has cultivated his fortune mainly through private equity. Interestingly, while Josh is known as a lifelong Democrat, Jared and their father Charles, who faced legal troubles before being pardoned and is now involved in supporting Trump's presidency, align more with the Republican party.

The significant increase in Kushner's fortune is intricately linked to Thrive Capital's growth. In an investor letter recently obtained by Bloomberg, Kushner disclosed that Thrive has amassed over $65 billion in assets under management—almost tripling the $23 billion from December 2024 and exceeding previous filings from just the month before. Additionally, he hinted at a potential sale involving a minor interest in Thrive, akin to a 3% share sold in 2021.

Established in 2010 in New York, Thrive began with a modest $5 million fund, backed by VC veteran Joel Cutler. At that time, Kushner was only 25 and had recently transitioned from a position at Goldman Sachs. Thrive has since launched ten primary funds, the latest, Thrive X, closing in March with over $10 billion in commitments.

Billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen praised Thrive’s rapid ascent and quality of investments in a 2017 Forbes article, noting its recognition as a leading firm in the sector.

Over the years, Kushner has successfully invested in many high-profile startups. His first notable gain came in 2012 when Instagram was purchased by Facebook shortly after Thrive invested in it. Many other Thrive-backed entities have gone on to achieve public listings or acquisitions, such as Cursor and SpaceX, while others, including Anduril, Databricks, and Stripe, remain private at staggering valuations. OpenAI, with its prior valuation of $852 billion, is also expected to create significant buzz in the market soon.

In his investor letter, Kushner articulated a belief that a small number of exceptional companies generate extensive value over time.

Forbes first assessed Josh's net worth at $500 million in 2016, predominantly derived from his Thrive shares. By 2021, after selling a 3% interest to Goldman Sachs, he became a billionaire. This growth continued as Thrive repurchased that stake later and sold it again, which led to a valuation jump.

As Thrive managed assets surged, so did Kushner's wealth, mainly propelled byvaluations of its investments. Notably, he revealed that more than half of Thrive's $65 billion in assets comes from investment gains, with average annual returns around 33%, significantly outperforming market indices over similar timeframes.

The returns are benefiting Kushner directly; Thrive has generated over $1 billion in liquidity within the last year and anticipates more opportunities for liquidity in the near future.

The anticipated IPO of OpenAI could dramatically enhance Kushner's financial landscape, potentially valuing the firm over $1 trillion. Furthermore, Thrive has made recent public investments, including a $215 million stake in Amazon, which has already appreciated, and a $100 million investment in Shopify that has also increased in value.

Kushner's own cash on hand in Thrive reportedly grew from $186 million in 2024 to $500 million by mid-2023, supplemented by management fees and carried interest.

With such substantial potential income ahead, Kushner may encounter considerable tax responsibilities. Investing in high-value franchises like the Lakers could provide major tax advantages, depending on the deal's structure.

If they comply with certain guidelines, including an active role in management, Kushner and Iger could categorize a significant portion of the $12.5 billion purchase price as “intangible” assets, allowing them to amortize costs over 15 years and significantly reduce personal tax burdens, potentially generating yearly savings of about $750 million.

This strategy has historical precedent; Steve Ballmer employed a similar approach with the L.A. Clippers. The current price escalation for the Lakers illustrates the soaring stakes in the sports industry, as they recently set records for franchise sales.

Uncertainty remains regarding any additional partners in the deal, given that investments from firms like Thrive can only encompass a maximum of 20% of an NBA team. Meanwhile, the Buss family and other investors may retain stakes. Nevertheless, with Kushner’s expansive wealth, it appears he has ample resources to finalize the acquisition, positioning himself for continued financial gains as Thrive's portfolio grows increasingly valuable through public offerings or acquisitions.

There, the 41-year-old billionaire was celebrating another deal that closed the same day: Thrive Holdings, the company he formed in 2025 to buy up services firms and transform them with AI, had raised $2 billion from investors including SoftBank at a $12.5 billion valuation.

“We feel extraordinarily fortunate to be building during a period of such profound innovation,” he wrote, with no mention of the Lakers, a championship team famous enough to survive the omission.

It’s been that kind of summer for Kushner. Known in Silicon Valley circles for his VC firm Thrive Capital’s prescient bets on companies like Instagram, Spotify and more recently OpenAI, he has spent the past two months looking less like a press-shy venture capitalist and more like a star powerbroker. In early July, he was spotted attending Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce’s star-studded wedding at Madison Square Garden alongside his supermodel wife, Karlie Kloss. Days later, he was in Sun Valley, Idaho at Allen & Co.’s invitation only conference—often called the “summer camp for billionaires”—where he was photographed with OpenAI president Greg Brockman.

It’s been an even more eventful season on the business side. Kushner notched a major win when Elon Musk’s SpaceX went public in June, vaulting Thrive’s stake in the rocketmaker to a reported $10 billion. In July, Kushner and Thrive were embroiled in a controversial deal to buy a stake in the FIFA World Cup at a $20 billion valuation—only for the project to collapse within three days.

And the news keeps coming: On Monday, less than a week after the Lakers deal was announced, a lawyer representing the NBA team’s controlling governor, Jeanie Buss, denied that she had agreed with her five siblings on selling their collective 17.8% stake in the team, potentially complicating Kushner and Iger’s $12.5 billion deal before it ever reaches the parade route.

What is clear is that the younger Kushner brother’s wealth is growing at a meteoric pace. Forbes estimates he’s now worth $16.7 billion, up from $5.2 billion a year ago, due to Thrive’s ballooning assets and the new valuation for Thrive Holdings. That estimate doesn’t include the value of his Lakers stake, which couldn’t be determined because the deal hasn’t closed. He also still holds a small stake in the Miami Heat, worth an estimated $80 million, which he will have to divest before the Lakers acquisition goes through. A representative for Kushner declined to comment.

That makes the younger Kushner nearly 17 times richer than his brother Jared, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and ad-hoc special peace envoy, who built his own fortune largely through private equity firm Affinity Partners. And it makes him nearly three times as rich as the president himself. The family contrast is almost comical: Josh is famously a lifelong Democrat, while Jared and their father Charles—who was convicted of tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions and witness tampering in 2005 before being pardoned by Trump in 2020 and now serves as Trump’s ambassador to France—sit firmly inside the president’s orbit.

The wealth surge is mostly a Thrive Capital story. In an August letter to Thrive investors obtained by Bloomberg, Kushner revealed Thrive had more than $65 billion in assets under management, nearly triple the $23 billion it held in December 2024 and $15 billion more than it disclosed in a regulatory filing just one month earlier in July. In the same letter, he also floated the potential sale of a small stake in the firm—similar in size to the 3% it sold in 2021 and then flipped two years later—to its original shareholders plus “a small number of new institutional partners.”

Founded in 2010 in New York, Thrive began with a $5 million fund seeded by Joel Cutler, cofounder of VC firm General Catalyst. Kushner was just 25 at the time, fresh off a one-year stint on Goldman Sachs' private equity desk after graduating from Harvard Business School. The firm has since raised 10 flagship funds, with the latest, Thrive X, closing in March with more than $10 billion in committed capital.

“Thrive has had one of the shortest trajectories from inception to top-tier status, reputation, deal flow and quality investments,” billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen told Forbes in 2017.

Over the past 16 years, Kushner has taken a slice of many of the world’s valuable startups. His first major win came in 2012, when Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion just days after Thrive had invested at a $500 million valuation. Many Thrive-backed companies have since gone public or been acquired, including Cursor, Instacart, Nubank, Robinhood, Spotify and, of course, SpaceX. Others remain private at enormous valuations, such as Anduril (last valued at $61 billion in May), Databricks (last valued at $190 billion in August) and Stripe (last valued at $159 billion in February). Then there’s OpenAI, which was last valued at $852 billion in March and is set to go public in the next year.

“We have long believed that a small number of exceptional companies create a disproportionate amount of value and can compound their advantages for far longer than the market expects,” Kushner wrote in the investor letter.

Forbes first estimated Josh’s net worth at $500 million in 2016, when his stake in Thrive was worth about $240 million. Five years later in 2021, he sold a 3% stake in Thrive to Goldman Sachs unit Petershill Partners at a $3.6 billion valuation, making Josh a billionaire with a $2 billion fortune thanks to his estimated 66% stake in the firm. Thrive later repurchased that stake in December 2022 and sold it one month later to a consortium of investors—including Iger, KKR cofounder Henry Kravis, Asia's richest man Mukesh Ambani, French telecoms mogul Xavier Niel and Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann—for $175 million, valuing Thrive at $5.3 billion. That vaulted Kushner’s net worth to $3.6 billion.

As Thrive’s assets under management kept climbing, so did Kushner’s fortune. Much of that is thanks to the soaring value of its investments: In his recent letter to investors, Kushner said that “more than half” of the firm’s $65 billion in assets was “driven by investment gains.” He also wrote that Thrive’s funds have returned an average of 33% a year after fees; over a similar time period, the S&P 500 gained about 14% a year and the Nasdaq about 17%.

Those gains are also making their way directly to Kushner and his investors: “Over the last 12 months, we have generated more than $1 billion of liquidity and believe there may be an opportunity for billions of dollars in additional liquidity in the coming quarters,” he wrote in the letter.

Much of that could come from OpenAI’s IPO, which could value the firm at more than $1 trillion. Thrive has also dipped its toes in public markets lately, revealing a $215 million stake in Amazon as of the end of June, which is already worth $230 million. The firm invested $100 million in ecommerce platform Shopify in March—a stake that’s now valued at $130 million—and retains a 0.14% stake in SpaceX worth $2.6 billion. Its oldest public investment is Obamacare-based health insurance startup Oscar Health, which Kushner founded in 2012. That stake is worth $200 million after Oscar’s stock surged by 114% this year on membership growth and profits.

The value of Kushner’s own cash invested in Thrive’s funds has also grown, from an estimated $186 million in 2024 to $500 million by the end of June. On top of that, he gets a cut of the 2% to 2.5% in annual management fees that Thrive charges its investors, plus a share of the carried interest generated by the firm’s investments.

With all of that potential cash coming in, Kushner could be facing a major tax liability on those capital gains in the coming years. Investing in sports franchises—especially ones as valuable as the Lakers—could bring significant tax benefits, depending on how he and Iger structure the deal.

If they meet certain criteria, including taking an active role in running the team and other conditions related to how they structure the purchase, Kushner and Iger could allocate up to 90% of that $12.5 billion sticker price—including media rights, player contracts and the purchase premium itself—as “intangible” assets under the tax code. Those can be amortized over 15 years and used to lower the owners’ personal tax bills, potentially generating a tax benefit of some $750 million per year.

It’s not a new playbook: former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used a similar strategy after purchasing the L.A. Clippers for $2 billion in 2014. What has changed is the price of admission. The Lakers are now breaking the record for the most expensive sports team sale twice in two years, after Mark Walter bought them just two years ago for $10 billion.

It’s still unclear if Kushner and Iger, who became friends through their model wives Karlie Kloss and Willow Bay, will have any partners in the deal. Funds like Thrive Capital and its Thrive Eternal unit, which is investing in sports and cultural assets, can only acquire up to 20% of an NBA team, and the Buss heirs and biotech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong may still retain a stake. But Kushner’s rapidly growing fortune means he’s likely got enough cash to cover the bill—and as Thrive’s investments keep going public or getting acquired at ever-higher valuations, he seems set to keep raking in the profits.

"Many PhD students actually start by doing this," he noted, emphasizing the practical relevance of the achievement.

Hughes shared with TechCrunch that their focus was not merely on the victory over other AI systems but rather on the methodology behind their success. The standout aspect of Faraday lies in its operational framework: while models like Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 are built on vast systems, Faraday operates on a relatively smaller model known as Qwen 3.6, which only consists of 27 billion parameters. This parameter count broadly reflects a model's size and associated training expenses. They set the bar for success even higher than mere accuracy; they aimed for Faraday to exhibit "research taste," an intuitive sense for valuable experiments and effective study designs.

Instilling a sense of taste in an AI is complex, and this is where the concept of reinforcement learning becomes valuable. This approach rewards the AI for successful outcomes instead of issuing a strict set of rules to follow. Rather than concentrating solely on the methodology of scientific research, Inherent employs this reinforcement technique, believing it will better equip its agents for their ultimate objective: to contribute meaningfully across diverse scientific domains.

“We’re continually guided by the vision of creating an AI scientist agent infused with taste,” Hughes remarked. This vision has influenced Inherent’s development strategy, including opting to use OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Codex instead of creating their coding tools from scratch, mirroring how actual scientists leverage existing technology rather than reinventing the wheel.

The company aims to develop agents that provide honest feedback rather than tell users only what they wish to hear. Hughes envisions a collaboration where an ideal teammate returns with new results after conducting experiments, fostering a culture of inquiry and exploration.

Moreover, Inherent's internal culture reflects this collaborative spirit, with its team of twelve working together in-person at their office in King’s Cross—a once-neglected area revitalized by Google DeepMind’s influence and transformed into a leading hub for AI innovation. The startup has plans to expand its team to between 20 and 25 members by year-end. Of all the startups launched by Google DeepMind alumni, Inherent has gotten relatively little attention. But while better-funded rivals have yet to show the world anything concrete, the London-based team is starting to share what it’s been building.

Just weeks after emerging from stealth with a $50 million seed round, the British startup says its newly released AI agent, Faraday, has outperformed larger, better-known models at a specific task: independently reproducing the findings of published scientific papers without being told the answer in advance.

That may sound like a mere party trick given Inherent’s much loftier goal — building AI that can discover new scientific knowledge and not just verify old results. But paper replication is a standard training exercise for human scientists, too, cofounder and chief scientist Edward Hughes said. “Many PhD students actually start by doing this.”

Beating other AI systems at the task wasn’t the point, Hughes told TechCrunch; how they got there was. “What was most interesting to us about this was not so much the result of beating those frontier agents — which of course we liked — but was actually the way we went about building this.”

Here’s the part that should catch an investor’s eye: measured against Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 — both much larger, frontier-scale systems — Faraday runs on a comparatively tiny model called Qwen 3.6 that has just 27 billion parameters. (Roughly speaking, “parameters” is a proxy for a model’s size and, typically, its training costs, as well.) Inherent’s bar for success was also higher than simply accuracy. Beyond replicating results, it wanted Faraday to demonstrate “research taste” — an instinct for what experiments are worth running and how to design them well.

Teaching something as intangible as taste is hard, which is where reinforcement learning comes in. It’s a training method that rewards an AI system for good outcomes rather than spelling out rules for it to follow. Rather than training its agents primarily on the study of how science itself is conducted, Inherent leans on this reward-based approach, betting it will generalize better to its longer-term goal of agents capable of contributing across many scientific fields.

“We’re always guided by that north star of building an AI scientist agent and imbuing our agents with taste,” Hughes said. That focus has also shaped what Inherent chooses not to build. Rather than developing its own coding tool, it had Faraday use OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Codex instead, much the way human scientists lean on existing software rather than building everything themselves, according to the company.

Inherent is also trying to avoid building agents that simply tell users what they want to hear. Instead, Hughes said, the goal is modeled on his favorite kind of teammate — the kind who comes back and says: “I got curious about this, and I went off and I did these experiments. What do you think of these results?”

That collaborative instinct extends to how Inherent operates as a company. Its dozen employees all work in person out of an office in King’s Cross — the once-rundown London neighborhood that Google DeepMind’s presence helped turn into one of the world’s top AI hubs. “We believe that London is the place to be,” Hughes said.

Hughes is bullish on London’s density of AI talent, but he has also added his voice to calls to end “garden leave” — the practice, common in the U.K., of barring departing employees from joining or starting a rival company for months after they resign. It’s a restriction American researchers generally don’t face, giving U.S. startups a head start on hiring talent who’ve left a prior role. “This is a personal view rather than a company view, but I was affected by the garden leave problem,” he told TechCrunch.

Hughes eventually got around that constraint and started Inherent alongside two other DeepMind alumni and a fourth cofounder. The startup isn’t slowing down either. It plans to grow its headcount to “about 20 to 25” by the end of the year. Given its ambitions in world models as well, and with Demis Hassabis’s new role leaving some DeepMind staff unsettled, Inherent’s hiring push could make it an appealing landing spot for DeepMind employees weighing a move.

Just a year ago, the concept of recursive self-improvement—where AI systems enhance their own capabilities—wasn't on his agenda, but it is now a crucial topic for his research group.

"The parameters of the job are evolving quite rapidly," he noted in an interview with Business Insider.

Chatterji's journey to OpenAI began in 2024, following prominent roles in economic policy. He has contributed to the Biden administration as coordinator of the $52 billion CHIPS initiative and served as acting deputy director of the National Economic Council. Prior to that, he was the chief economist at the Commerce Department and has an extensive academic background as a professor of business and public policy at Duke University.

Initially, OpenAI was not on Chatterji's radar. He intended to write a book based on his governmental experiences until a former colleague, now at OpenAI, reached out to him. Their early discussions revolved around supply chains and semiconductors, areas where Chatterji had significant expertise and which were pertinent to OpenAI's considerations regarding the necessary computing infrastructure for its models. Over time, these discussions expanded to encompass the economic implications of AI.

"This is a rapidly emerging field, which led to the creation of the chief economist role," explained Chatterji, who reports to OpenAI's finance director, Sarah Friar.

Chatterji now supervises a research team of roughly a dozen professionals, including economists, data analysts, and individuals with backgrounds in education and public service. While he aims to expand his team, he refrained from specifying the number of new hires.

"Our team is built around three key inquiries: the current impacts of AI on work, how businesses are embracing and restructuring around AI, and what the potential implications of increasingly advanced AI could be for the economy in the future," Chatterji shared.

He pointed out the challenge of addressing these questions, as they are evolving almost as quickly as AI technology itself. This dynamic nature necessitates adaptability among team members.

"We seek individuals who can apply rigorous economic analysis to the present circumstances while also being ready to explore questions that remain unanswered," Chatterji remarked. "Comfort with uncertainty is essential."

Chatterji's own background exemplifies this versatility: his previous academic research focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, yet at OpenAI, his role encompasses a wider scope of topics, ranging from labor markets to how enterprises adopt technology.

Collaboration and agility are also crucial within his team. Chatterji noted the volume of inquiries they receive from colleagues about economic aspects. His team collaborates with external entities, including governments and academic institutions. They recently articulated that no single organization possesses the necessary resources to tackle these economic issues independently.

The speed of innovation at OpenAI adds another layer of complexity. Chatterji described the pace as "a little insane," citing a study with a dataset that concluded in June, which others were already deeming outdated by August.

Self-direction is equally important. Team members need to identify which issues deserve attention and who will benefit from their findings, rather than adhering rigidly to predetermined instructions.

Despite the hurdles involved, Chatterji has identified a silver lining in researching AI's influence on employment. "Typically, an economist might not be the most popular person at social gatherings," he admitted. "But now, people are curious to know what role AI will play in the job market."

Employees on the company's economic research team are tasked with studying how the technology is affecting workers, businesses, institutions, and the broader economy.

The ChatGPT maker's chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji, says thriving in these roles takes a particular mix of skills and mindsets because AI's rapid evolution can quickly send the work in new directions.

For example, recursive self-improvement — the ability for AI systems to improve themselves — wasn't on Chatterji's radar a year ago but is now a topic his team is studying.

"The job description is changing a lot," he told Business Insider.

From the White House to OpenAI

Chatterji came to OpenAI in 2024 after stints at the highest levels of economic policymaking. He served in the Biden White House as coordinator of the $52 billion CHIPS program and as acting deputy director of the National Economic Council. Before that, he was chief economist at the Commerce Department. He has also spent much of his career at Duke University, where he is a professor of business and public policy.

OpenAI wasn't on Chatterji's radar. He was planning to write a book about his experience in government when a former colleague who had moved to the company reached out. They initially discussed supply chains and semiconductors — subjects Chatterji had studied and that mattered to OpenAI as it thought about the computing infrastructure needed to train and run its models. Eventually, the conversations broadened into how the company should think about the economics of AI.

"This is a whole emerging category, and that's when the chief economist role got created," said Chatterji, who reports to OpenAI's finance chief, Sarah Friar.

Three big questions

Chatterji, 48, now leads a research team of about a dozen people, including economists, data scientists, business professionals, and former teachers and government workers. He said he's looking to hire more people, though he declined to specify how many.

"We built the team around three sets of questions: How AI is changing work today; how businesses are adopting and reorganizing around AI; and what increasingly capable AI could mean for the economy tomorrow," said Chatterji.

The challenge, he added, is that those questions are changing almost as quickly as AI evolves, which is why thriving on his team requires flexibility.

"We need people who can bring rigorous economic thinking to what's happening today, but who are also comfortable tackling questions where we don't have all the answers yet," Chatterji said. "You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."

He pointed to his own background as an example. His academic research centered on innovation and entrepreneurship, but at OpenAI, his work spans a much broader set of issues, from labor markets to enterprise adoption.

Collaboration, speed, and self-direction

To work on Chatterji's team, a willingness to collaborate with others is also imperative.

"We get a lot of questions from our colleagues about economics," said Chatterji, adding that his team also works closely with third parties such as governments and universities. In a recent blog post explaining this approach, the team said no single entity has the tools or resources to answer these economic questions alone.

Speed matters, too, with Chatterji describing the pace of innovation at OpenAI as "a little insane." He pointed to a study whose dataset ended in June that some people were already dismissing as dated by August.

The work also requires a degree of self-direction. Chatterji said team members need to help determine which problems are worth solving and for whom their work is intended, rather than simply following a fixed mandate.

Despite the challenges, Chatterji said he's discovered an upside to studying AI's impact on work.

"If you're an economist at a cocktail party or on the sidelines of your kid's soccer game, usually you're not very popular," said Chatterji. Now, he said, people want to know: "What's AI going to do in the job market?"

OpenAI's Chief Economist on What It Takes to Study AI's Impact on Work

OpenAI has launched a plugin for the Apple Messages app, and as Bloomberg notes, it could raise privacy and security concerns. At the moment, it's only available to ChatGPT Work and Codex users on Mac, allowing them to search messages and even draft and send replies through the chatbot on their desktop. In the example OpenAI posted, the user asked ChatGPT to look for conversations they'd missed the day before in their Messages app. They then used the chatbot to write and send their reply.

The feature is, at least, opt-in. Bloomberg says users will have to do several things to allow the plugin to work. First, they'll have to allow ChatGPT to access their Mac's on-device Messages history when the permissions screen pops up during the setup process. They'll also be prompted to change their privacy preferences in Mac's System Settings to give ChatGPT Full Disk Access. In addition, they'll have to give ChatGPT access to the names of their contacts and to automation tools. In other words, nobody would be installing the plugin by accident.

An OpenAI spokesperson told Engadget the plugin does not create an index of a user's texts. Additionally, users must explicitly prompt ChatGPT to draw on context from their past messages before the chatbot will read a thread. The plugin will also not send a message on your behalf until you explicitly approve the message ChatGPT drafted for you. "We care deeply about user privacy, and the plugin is designed to be transparent and keep users in control of their Messages data," the company told Engadget.

It's not clear if OpenAI worked with Apple to develop the plugin, but the latter has history of cutting off third parties' access to its services if they didn't get permission. In 2024, for instance, it kept disabling Beeper Mini chat app's access to iMessage until Beeper gave up rolling out fixes that re-enabled the integration. It's also worth noting that Apple and OpenAI aren't quite on the best of terms recently. The iPhone-maker sued OpenAI in July, accusing it of trade secret theft. It claimed that OpenAI specifically hired its employees away with the purpose of obtaining confidential company information.

Last month, more than a thousand employees at frontier AI companies signed a letter asking the US government to find a way to “pace” AI development, citing the risk of the technology spiraling out of human control as it begins to build itself.

They were right to be concerned: just days earlier, two AI models that OpenAI was testing internally escaped the test environment, then autonomously hacked the company Hugging Face and at least three other online services. A few days after that, Anthropic announced that some of their models had also broken out and hacked other companies during testing.

Against that backdrop, the letter’s recommendation to install brakes in case they’re needed at the frontier of automated AI development makes sense. But the rationale the letter gives for why the government needs to step in is notable: “Each company—and country—is under intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow that acceleration.”

I know – from my own experience and from countless conversations with former colleagues in the AI industry – how real these pressures are. While working at OpenAI, I helped establish the practice of companies writing “system cards” that describe AI systems’ capabilities, risks and safety mitigations in detail.

So what would it look like for companies to prepare for a possible slowdown?

First, they could voluntarily invite rigorous, independent auditing of their safety and security practices. This would go beyond the vetting of AI hacking abilities that the White House is now pursuing. It would look at a range of risks and dig deep into company practices. It should be less like filling out a questionnaire and more like a nuclear safety inspector who has deep, frequent access to the company.

If an AI slowdown is needed, auditing would also reassure each company that their competitors are playing by the rules.

Second, they could actively participate in the organizations already built for this purpose of coordinating across the industry, such as the Frontier Model Forum, and move quickly to establish complementary ones.

Elon Musk recently said that AI companies should meet periodically to share notes on safety – as if this was an unheard-of concept. He or his staff could join existing conversations along these lines tomorrow if SpaceX joined the Frontier Model Forum, which has already worked through the complex antitrust hurdles involved in safety information sharing. Other cross-industry institutions will be needed for other purposes, and do not require government action to get founded and funded.

Third, they could invest in the technologies we need to make AI guardrails global.

Critics of the idea of an AI slowdown correctly point out that American companies couldn’t slow down for very long without China catching up. But neither the US nor China wants to lose control over AI, and each country takes AI more and more seriously by the day, so cooperation can’t yet be ruled out either. A key question is whether we prepare in advance. In order for the US to be highly confident that China couldn’t violate an AI agreement, and vice versa, we’ll need sophisticated verification technologies like those developed during the cold war for nuclear arms control.

Fortunately, there is a growing ecosystem of researchers and engineers developing those very technologies: tools that can prove a set of chips is only running existing AI systems rather than training new ones, that those chips are in a certain physical location, or that the system that got tested is the same one being deployed at scale. AI companies could accelerate the development of this critical type of technology today through funding and participation in pilot projects, but to my knowledge, they haven’t yet done so.

Fourth, they could proactively push – and certainly should not kill – legislation that leads to stronger incentives for safety, security, and external oversight.

You can’t complain about an irresponsible AI race while fighting commonsense guardrails. Less than a year ago, some of the same companies who are asking for regulation now were pushing to overturn most state AI laws. We still have no real legislation on frontier AI on the books at a federal level, and the first AI auditing requirement at the state level won’t kick in until 2028.

There are promising bipartisan proposals in Congress right now, such as the Frontier Act from the US representatives Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan, which would require developers of advanced AI systems to create a risk management framework, report dangerous incidents, and subject themselves to independent audits. These and other commonsense proposals, such as protecting AI whistleblowers who disclose safety incidents directly to the government, deserve vigorous support.

I agree with the signatories, and am glad that after many years of being ignored or downplayed, the risks of unbridled AI competition are widely recognized. The US government should be doing its part to address this, and swiftly. But making AI go well is a shared responsibility. Companies that lag behind their peers on safety, don’t invite external audits of their systems, or call for brakes while doing little to build them won’t be able to blame the AI race when something goes wrong.

Until both OpenAI and Anthropic get close enough to their planned IPOs to release their financials, we have to look to other sources for signs of how well their businesses are doing. One of those sources, Ramp, the corporate credit card and expense management company, has just released some surprising new data: OpenAI has started gaining on Anthropic with U.S. businesses.

OpenAI, which was once the runaway leader with both businesses and consumers, lost the lead among Ramp’s paying business users back in May. That’s when Anthropic hit 41% market share to OpenAI’s 39%. The ChatGPT maker has never regained that lead. As of July, Anthropic has nearly 44% to OpenAI’s nearly 40%.

The data covers more than 70,000 American businesses that spend billions via Ramp’s bill pay and corporate card products. Ramp’s customers are spread across industries but, as a popular Silicon Valley corporate credit card, they do skew toward the tech industry.

A closer look at the most recent data, according to Ramp economist Ara Kharazian, shows that OpenAI is currently growing faster among this segment in Q3 to date than Anthropic. Mind you, there’s still a month left in the quarter and that’s like 30 AI years, so the trend could easily shift again before it’s over. Ramp also declined to provide actual dollars spent, sharing only percentages.

To borrow ChatGPT’s own hedging style for a moment: This isn’t a measure of the total market. It excludes large enterprises that use spend-management tools from providers like American Express, rather than Ramp. But it’s enough data to show market indications. And what it shows is that Anthropic hasn’t won permanently. Businesses are willing to flop back and forth as each lab releases new models, volatility that should give both companies’ investors pause about how “sticky” enterprise AI spending really is.

“GPT-5.6 Sol is really good, increasingly the choice for developers,” Kharazian posted on X about OpenAI’s new growth. “Fable 5, meanwhile, disappointed both in adoption and real-world application given price + data retention requirements imposed by regulators,” he continued.

That may be an over simplification. Fable — Anthropic’s higher-end model tier — is expensive but it’s also built for a more targeted set of use cases than a general chatbot. Still, Anthropic did cause some outrage when it warned Fable users that it must retain their data for 30 days.

Ramp’s data also suggests that both companies should be growing business revenue, even as they duke it out for market share, because the market overall is expanding. The percentage of companies that pay for AI among these Ramp customers has been steadily climbing. It topped 50% in March. It reached nearly 56% by July.
