According to Osterman, the term “disposable workers” encompasses three main groups: contractors, freelancers, and those in marginal roles. Contractors can include a wide range from janitors to travel nurses, while freelancers may be gig economy workers like Uber drivers or part-time programmers. Marginal workers, on the other hand, include individuals who are technically employed but face limited opportunities for advancement, such as adjunct professors or junior staff in law firms who handle fundamental tasks but are unlikely to be promoted.

Osterman asserts that these workers are often used to fulfill essential roles within organizations without any commitment from their employers. This shift is driven by both economic factors and changing attitudes; many companies view a small percentage of their workforce as crucial, with some studies indicating that only 5% of employees generate 95% of a company’s value. This perception can lead to a lack of investment in the remaining workforce.

A recent example underscores this trend. Earlier in the year, Deloitte announced cutbacks to paid parental leave and family-building benefits for certain supportive staff roles, while retaining these perks for client-facing employees. This decision suggests that the roles seen as non-essential are the most susceptible to disruption by AI technologies. Osterman argues that while the rise of disposable workers isn't directly caused by AI, the uncertainty surrounding AI's capabilities will likely intensify this trend.

As organizations are unsure of their future staffing needs amidst the AI revolution, it may be more financially prudent for them to engage disposable workers—who typically lack benefits like health insurance—rather than investing in full-time employees. Osterman explains that these shifts may have a heightened impact on entry-level positions, as companies may find it easier to forgo hiring junior talent instead of laying off existing senior staff members.
