At an event marking Microsoft's 50th anniversary held at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on April 4, 2025, Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, shared significant updates regarding the company’s commitment to responsible AI practices.

In the wake of industry discussions, Microsoft has unveiled a draft code of conduct aimed at regulating its artificial intelligence models. This announcement follows recent calls by leaders from competitors, Anthropic and OpenAI, to decelerate the speed of AI development.

As a key player in the AI and cloud computing sectors, Microsoft aspires to position itself as a responsible leader. In an interview with CNBC, Suleyman emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI technologies serve humanity rather than replacing human roles. He noted, "We received feedback indicating a desire for a more explicit commitment to AI always functioning in the service of people, rather than creating dependency or mimicking human behavior. Our goal is to enhance human judgment and maintain personal agency."

Although the guidelines have been under development for approximately five months, Microsoft decided to release them in response to the heightened conversation around AI ethics. The growing concerns from both industry experts and the general public have been loud and clear. Just last week, a researcher from Anthropic, Jacob Coxon, announced his resignation, citing the alarming trajectory towards self-improving superintelligent systems that jeopardize our safety.

In light of these concerns, industry leaders have begun to reflect. Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei recently indicated that incidents like the Hugging Face event played a role in his decision to advocate for a more measured approach to AI model advancements. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, showed his backing for this stance, while SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed agreement with Amodei on social media.

Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, also joined the conversation, stating, "We appreciate the research, focus, and careful pacing required to achieve alignment in AI development." As discussions around regulatory measures continue, lawmakers are increasingly calling for stronger safeguards in the realm of artificial intelligence.
