On Wednesday, Meta announced plans to lease an advanced data center in India, boasting a capacity of 168 megawatts, from Reliance Industries, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani.
The conglomerate, which operates in diverse sectors ranging from petrochemicals to textiles and media, will construct the data center for Meta, with an expected completion within two years. The deal includes an option for future expansion, as detailed in a company release.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s founder and CEO, highlighted that this state-of-the-art facility situated in Jamnagar will enhance their global AI infrastructure while reinforcing their long-term commitment to the Indian economy.
Meta's collaboration with Reliance dates back to 2020, when Zuckerberg's firm poured $5.7 billion into Ambani’s telecom venture, Jio Platforms.
In the past year, both companies strengthened their alliance through a joint venture, which made Meta’s open-source AI models accessible to Indian businesses and developers.
Ambani, serving as Reliance's chairman, hailed Meta's current investment as a pivotal advancement for India's digital infrastructure.
The race is on among global hyperscale firms to establish data centers in India, with investments amounting to $400 billion flowing into the nation’s AI sector over the previous year. Most of this capital focuses on data centers and the related energy infrastructure.
According to a June 2 report by global brokerage Nomura, India’s data center industry is rapidly developing and is expected to reach 7 gigawatts in capacity by 2030, maintaining its cost efficiency in comparison to other developed markets in the Asia Pacific and Western regions.
Additionally, earlier this year, the Indian government introduced a 20-year tax exemption for hyperscale companies that operate data centers catering to global clients.
Meta is also collaborating with Indian renewable energy companies, CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, to secure nearly 1 gigawatt of clean energy. These initiatives will span northern and southern states in India, providing sustainable energy for Meta's expanding infrastructure in the region.
The company affirmed that these investments align with its international goal of achieving 100% clean and renewable energy for all operations.
