In a strategic move to strengthen its AI infrastructure in India, Meta has partnered with Reliance Industries to establish a data center, marking its initial foray into AI facilities within the country. This collaboration, unveiled on Wednesday, involves the development of a significant 168-megawatt data center located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This partnership builds on Meta's previous multibillion-dollar investment in Reliance's Jio Platforms and a $100 million joint venture formed last year focused on creating enterprise AI solutions for clients both in India and globally.
This initiative coincides with India's emergence as a prime location for AI infrastructure investments, as major tech firms increasingly look beyond their traditional bases to meet the escalating demand for computing power needed to train and implement artificial intelligence models. Notable players like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have unveiled similar investments in the nation, which has witnessed rapid growth in its data center capabilities in recent years.
The interest in India's data center market is not just limited to international firms. Recently, AirTrunk, backed by Blackstone, announced its intention to invest $30 billion to construct 5 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2030. Additionally, domestic corporations such as Adani Group and Tata Consultancy Services have introduced ambitious plans to expand their data center operations, specifically to accommodate AI workloads.
To lure such investments, the Indian government has implemented various policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers until 2047, provided their operations are managed from Indian data centers.
According to government reports, India's data center capacity has surged from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to an estimated 1.5 gigawatts by 2025. Projections indicate that this capacity could increase more than fivefold to over 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, fueled by the proliferation of cloud services, AI applications, and the growing needs for local data processing.
The Meta-Reliance collaboration further solidifies a burgeoning partnership that began with Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020. Since then, the two companies have broadened their joint efforts in digital services and enterprise AI, culminating in this latest infrastructure development.
As part of their agreement, Meta will lease space at Reliance's forthcoming Jamnagar facility, which is designed to operate on renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling. Meta has agreed to manage the full cost associated with energy and water required for its operations there.
Reliance announced that the data center is expected to be operational within two years, with potential for future expansion. This facility is intended to fulfill Meta’s global infrastructure and AI computing demands, as India becomes more intricately linked to the company's international network of AI resources.
Under the terms of the partnership, Reliance will handle comprehensive services that include design, construction, renewable energy supply, connectivity, and ongoing management, indicating its ambition to establish itself as a leading provider of AI infrastructure for global tech enterprises.
In addition, Meta disclosed that it has secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through partnerships with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, which will enhance the renewable resources powering the Jamnagar facility.
However, the financial details of this partnership, the specific AI workloads anticipated to operate from this center, and any potential further investments by Meta in India's AI infrastructure remain undisclosed.
