Three months after launching its inaugural artificial intelligence model led by AI head Alexandr Wang, Meta is implementing a significant update in a bid to position itself competitively against OpenAI and Anthropic in pivotal market segments.
On Thursday, Meta unveiled Muse Spark 1.1, which Wang describes in a CNBC interview as the company's most advanced model for agentic and coding tasks to date. The original Muse Spark model, released in April, was available exclusively to a select group of partners through a private API preview.
With the latest update, Meta is expanding access to the new model's API via a developer portal, allowing users to sign up and follow integration guidelines during a public preview. According to a Meta spokesperson, some initial partners already have API access, while new users can join a waitlist for access over time. Currently, in a strategic move, Meta is restricting API access to its own platforms instead of making it available on external sites like the popular OpenRouter marketplace.
"This will leverage the computing infrastructure we've established," Wang stated.
This announcement marks the second significant update for the Muse suite this week, following the introduction of Muse Image on Tuesday. Previously known as Mango, this new model focuses on image creation and aims to draw in creators and advertisers.
Amid growing pressure from Wall Street, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is keen to demonstrate tangible returns on the company's substantial investments in AI infrastructure and development. While Meta is investing at a pace comparable to its hyperscale competitors, the company currently lacks a cloud infrastructure wing (though one is in development) and has struggled to keep pace with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in launching widely adopted AI models and applications.
