Healthcare professionals are starting to see AI as a tangible tool that significantly enhances clinical safety rather than just a theoretical concept. By automating routine tasks and streamlining workflows, AI alleviates the emotional and cognitive burden faced by clinicians. A recent survey found that nearly half of the respondents (49%) reported reduced work-related stress due to AI, while 65% expressed increased confidence in their decision-making abilities. Importantly, 39% of clinicians noted that AI has identified or prevented potential medical errors on at least three occasions in the past three months.
Ami Bhatt, MD, Chief Innovation Officer at the American College of Cardiology, emphasized this shift, stating, “Clinicians are beginning to experience AI not as an abstract technology, but as something that meaningfully changes clinical safety.”
Although many healthcare professionals are seeing improvements in workflow efficiency due to AI, the adoption process has revealed a lack of organizational readiness in some settings. While certain healthcare systems are already benefiting significantly from AI, many others are finding it challenging to progress beyond initial pilot programs. Successfully integrating AI into patient care remains a complex task, especially in environments with fragmented healthcare IT systems and limited interoperability, which complicate the consistent deployment of AI across various teams and care scenarios. These hurdles can hinder implementation efforts and restrict the scalability of AI in practical applications.
Despite these challenges, a majority of clinicians (59%) believe that their organization's leadership is taking appropriate steps toward the implementation of AI. However, progress is inconsistent, and the need for proper training remains a significant issue; 70% of clinicians reported experiencing inadequate, inconsistent, or unavailable training. The primary areas where training is urgently needed include verifying the accuracy of AI recommendations, developing the necessary technical skills to navigate AI tools, and understanding legal liabilities associated with their use.
