Mark Zuckerberg recently voiced strong criticism of Anthropic and OpenAI, both highly valued players in the artificial intelligence landscape. He expressed concerns that the methods these firms use to develop AI technology might concentrate power and subsequently limit broader access to its transformative benefits.
During an interview on Tuesday, the 42-year-old CEO of Meta refrained from directly naming Anthropic and OpenAI. However, he argued that if prominent research institutions pursue AI development with a heavily regulated approach—as these companies appear to do—they risk betraying the core principles underpinning American technological innovation, which could ultimately hinder progress.
“There’s a prevalent sense of doom in the discourse coming from many research labs in this field,” Zuckerberg remarked. “It’s essential that we have diverse perspectives contributing realism to this important conversation.”
His statements come as he typically engages infrequently with mainstream media, highlighting the intensifying debate over the principles that should guide AI development—an issue that is increasingly polarizing within Silicon Valley.
