On Friday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, admitted in an internal memo that the company has encountered challenges during its extensive workforce restructuring related to its ambitious move into artificial intelligence (AI). He acknowledged that “mistakes” have been made and will likely continue to occur as the company navigates the complexities of rapid technological advancements in AI.
Zuckerberg's comments come as Meta invests heavily—billions of dollars—into developing AI infrastructure and tools to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. The company is also investigating the use of AI agents to take over tasks that are currently performed by human employees.
Acknowledging the difficulties inherent in these transitions, Zuckerberg stated, “We’ve made mistakes and will almost certainly make more,” while emphasizing his commitment to maintaining as much stability as possible amid the ongoing changes. He cautioned against setting unrealistic expectations, noting, “The world is changing in ways that are out of our control.”
In his memo, Zuckerberg assured employees that no further company-wide layoffs are anticipated for the remainder of the year. This reassurance follows a recent decision to lay off approximately 10% of Meta's global workforce in May and the reassignment of around 7,000 employees to focus on AI-related projects.
The Meta boss indicated that the company would try to find new positions for staff members who have been moved to roles involving AI training. “By creating important new roles for people, this also allowed us to shrink the size of teams, knowing that if we make mistakes in some areas, we could transfer some people back,” Zuckerberg explained.
The ongoing restructuring efforts, combined with earlier job reallocations and eliminations, are projected to impact roughly 20% of Meta's overall workforce. As of late March, the company had employed nearly 78,000 people, according to its financial filings.
Meta has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these developments.
