The conversation surrounding healthcare's most talked-about trend invariably leads to the mention of artificial intelligence (AI), and rightly so. However, the true focus should not merely be on AI for its own sake, but rather on finding solutions—whether AI-infused or not—that address the pressing challenges faced by healthcare organizations.
The rapid rise of AI caught many healthcare systems off guard, as they struggled to crystallize clear strategies for its implementation. Questions emerged regarding which use cases to prioritize and how to govern its deployment responsibly while ensuring transparency.
Every health organization has its advocates for AI advancement and skeptics who worry about reliance on technology at the expense of human interaction. With numerous emerging applications and startups appearing daily, determining the right starting point can be overwhelming.
Having taken up a role as the corporate lead for generative AI initiatives at MEDITECH in 2023, I am continually involved in fostering responsible AI development, especially in identifying its most beneficial applications. My involvement has spanned from strategic planning to the minutiae of implementation.
These experiences demonstrate that to genuinely grasp AI's impact, a broad perspective is necessary. AI is just one of various technological innovations poised to transform healthcare. The pivotal question isn't “What AI solutions should I adopt?” but rather, “What processes and technologies will best support my patients, staff, or the viability of my healthcare system?” The answer may not always point to AI, but it's essential to start with your core values and build from there.
At our organization, we engage in a similar reflective exercise. While exploring potential AI use cases, we prioritize questions like, “What are our primary objectives in best serving our clientele?” This approach allows us to determine the appropriate solutions and where to focus our AI efforts. Below are some areas we've identified as impactful.
Enhancing Patient Outcomes
Healthcare providers inherently understand their patients' needs. For instance, they may recognize that a patient like Mr. Johnson isn’t likely to change his dietary preferences, or that Ms. Sanders, a busy parent juggling multiple responsibilities, struggles to attend in-person appointments.
However, what remains less apparent is that Mr. Johnson has faced multiple cardiac incidents while in Florida and that Ms. Sanders has historical medical factors that could increase her breast cancer risks—details not readily accessible during consultations. Here, AI steps up to synthesize valuable data from extensive medical records, allowing clinicians to access insights they might otherwise miss. Clinicians maintain the authority to make treatment decisions, armed with timely and relevant information.
Reducing Clinician and Administrative Load
Interestingly, few medical professionals choose this field due to a passion for paperwork. While documentation plays a critical role in patient care, it often becomes burdensome due to compliance and billing mandates. AI offers a solution to alleviate this load.
In practical terms, we have observed substantial time savings in processes like patient discharges and nurse transitions, thanks to AI. By summarizing patient interactions or shift handoffs, AI eases some of the documentation workload. Physicians remain responsible for the final approval, but with the monotonous tasks simplified, they can devote more time to direct patient care.
Fostering Meaningful Engagement
AI also shifts the focus from merely documenting care to actively coordinating it, with a notable application being ambient intelligence. While real-time documentation has sped up care delivery, it sometimes impairs the personal connection between providers and patients due to excessive reliance on screens. Through ambient intelligence, the AI documents patient interactions naturally, allowing caregivers to engage more meaningfully while still retaining oversight of the records.
This capability is proving invaluable not just for physicians but also for nursing workflows. Additionally, AI can enhance the clinician-patient relationship by facilitating communication via SMS or employing chatbots in patient portals to enhance interaction around health data.
Remaining Competitive and Financially Viable
As smaller community health systems strive to maintain their independence against larger entities, AI serves as an equalizer. It can automate previously labor-intensive tasks, freeing up resources for further investment in technology and staff.
AI can also optimize revenue streams, notably through predictive analytics for patient no-shows and mitigating financial losses via efficient claims processing. By using AI to refine claims appeal strategies, community health systems can guard against unforeseen expenses, ensuring they remain viable without resorting to workforce reductions.
Looking Beyond AI
However, it's crucial to recognize that AI isn't the only tool available; understanding when an AI solution is necessary—and when it isn't—is vital.
For instance, utilizing patient registries and surveillance tools can effectively manage chronic conditions by leveraging existing patient data. In such scenarios, the emphasis should be on optimizing current electronic health record (EHR) functionalities rather than pursuing new AI solutions unnecessarily.
The future we envision hinges on creating a connected and intelligent platform designed to enhance care delivery while fostering accountability and patient trust. This landscape should naturally incorporate AI, streamlining operations within EHRs and transforming data into actionable insights to unleash healthcare's full potential.
It's undeniable that innovation is thriving in the healthcare sector today, with AI poised to play a significant role. We eagerly anticipate the advancements ahead as we work towards realizing AI's potential in healthcare.
