According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive to develop an AI device that can be described as “essentially a smart speaker without a display.” This innovative product is designed to be battery-operated, doughnut-shaped, and approximately the size of a hockey puck. Set to launch in 2027, it is anticipated to retail at over $300. The device promises a distinctive design featuring moving components that will autonomously activate to indicate interactions with the user, as well as integrated lighting, a camera system, and various sensors.
Gurman’s insiders indicate that this “battery-powered” gadget will be lightweight and easy to maneuver around the home single-handedly, akin to Amazon's now-retired Tap speaker. He notes that it will function similarly to the voice mode available in the ChatGPT smartphone applications, but will boast enhanced capabilities for more natural human-like interaction, all while maintaining a design that is distinct from Apple's aesthetic—even amidst their ongoing legal disputes.
This speaker, which may also serve as a portable personal assistant, could potentially herald the beginning of a new “family of devices” that OpenAI is planning. Expect to hear significantly more about this lineup in the lead-up to its release.
