Prometheus, an innovative startup focused on physical AI and co-founded by Jeff Bezos alongside Vik Bajaj, the former co-founder of Verily, has successfully raised $12 billion, achieving a remarkable valuation of $41 billion.
The substantial funding came from a variety of notable sources, including Bezos himself, and major financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock.
This latest funding round marks the second for Prometheus, which started its journey late last year with an initial raise of $6.2 billion, as reported by CNBC.
The startup aims to develop an “artificial general engineer” — a sophisticated software designed to automate the design and creation of intricate physical systems, ranging from jet engines to pharmaceutical compounds.
Prometheus has an ambitious vision that seeks to overhaul large portions of engineering work through AI technology. While the startup intends to take over numerous engineering tasks, Bezos expressed confidence in the productivity increases that AI will bring, which he refers to as “labor scarcity.” This concept suggests a future where the demand for human labor outweighs the available workforce.
This viewpoint contrasts with forecasts from several tech industry voices, many of whom anticipate considerable job losses due to AI advancements. In a different outlook, Bezos believes that enhanced productivity will elevate living standards. He remarked, “People who today have two-earner households, they’ll become one-earner households. Maybe some people who are working overtime will stop working overtime.”
Currently, Prometheus employs approximately 150 staff members across its offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich, but the specifics of their projects remain undisclosed.
Bezos has indicated that a significant part of the newly acquired funding will be allocated to meet the company’s substantial computational needs.
Having overseen a workforce exceeding 1.5 million employees at Amazon, where he serves as executive chairman and the largest individual shareholder, Bezos is no stranger to labor dynamics. Under CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon has implemented a wave of layoffs in recent times, aligning with its own automation initiatives.
With its valuation at $41 billion, Prometheus stands as one of the most valuable AI startups to date and represents a major investment in the physical AI landscape. However, it isn’t the only firm drawing massive interest from investors. Recently, there has been a notable trend of venture capital flowing into the physical AI sector, which many investors and entrepreneurs believe to be more resilient than traditional software models, given how the physical environment creates competitive advantages that software alone cannot match.
