Many aspiring self-published authors likely envy the success of "Daggermouth," a novel that has captured the attention of readers everywhere. The story unfolds in a surveillance state overseen by an enigmatic elite, following the unexpected romance between the son of the president and an assassin tasked with killing him. Since its launch as a Kindle ebook by H. M. Wolfe on Amazon, "Daggermouth" has gained viral popularity. A TikTok influencer recently reflected, “Did I finish Daggermouth, or did Daggermouth finish me?” In February, Simon & Schuster acquired the rights to the book and its sequel for a seven-figure sum, with the latter set to release next year.
"Daggermouth" has maintained a prominent position on the USA Today best-seller list and is currently ranked number one in Amazon’s “science-fiction romance” category. It’s also notably at the top of an academic list analyzing AI-generated literature, where it was identified as the most popular among self-published ebooks featuring significant AI text.
Until now, AI-generated fiction has often been dismissed as subpar. The volume of new book releases on Amazon has surged, nearly tripling from 2022 to 2025. This spike isn't necessarily because more people have taken up writing; rather, many new titles appear to merely mimic existing works, seemingly to mislead consumers. Sales for these titles are typically lackluster and reviews often critical. Some works even present characters sharing identical names. In one instance, a line from a fantasy novel seemed to echo a prompt directed at a chatbot to emulate the style of a recognized author. However, the popularity of "Daggermouth" raises intriguing questions: Could AI-assisted fiction be improving in quality?
In a recent study, researchers examined over 14,000 Kindle ebooks using an AI-detection tool called Pangram. They found that 20% of the selected books were composed of over 25% AI-generated content; surprisingly, "Daggermouth" was reported to contain 60% AI material. While the researchers recognize that these statistics can be interpreted in various ways, they point out that the tool groups content flagged as either “AI-generated” or “moderately AI-assisted.” Despite Pangram being reliable, it’s not without flaws.
To strengthen their findings, lead researcher Tuhin Chakrabarty, a computer science professor at Stony Brook University, conducted an additional analysis. They searched for “rare expressions”—unique phrases of five or more words that appear in other suspected AI texts but seldom in human-written works. "Daggermouth" contained numerous such instances. For example, a line from a climactic scene appeared verbatim in another self-published ebook.
It's important to note that the study has not undergone peer review, and Wolfe firmly denied any claims of using generative AI, asserting that she authored "Daggermouth" independently. She expressed her strong opposition to generative AI's role in creative industries, emphasizing the serious implications that such accusations can have on writers' reputations. A spokesperson for Simon & Schuster affirmed their backing of the book, citing a traditional editorial process, though neither Wolfe nor the spokesperson addressed the concerns regarding shared phrases.
Chakrabarty maintains that "Daggermouth" exhibits “too many telltale signs” of AI writing for him to accept that it was entirely human-crafted. For instance, his team analyzed a specific chapter, and Pangram deemed all sections AI-generated. Another expert on AI-language detection, Mohit Iyyer, noted that it’s statistically improbable for a human-only written book to show such a high AI percentage based on Pangram’s findings.
The ongoing debate regarding the creation of "Daggermouth" mirrors conversations surrounding other recent bestsellers on Amazon. Chakrabarty’s research indicates that books with significant AI assistance constitute a substantial portion (20%) of Amazon’s ebook collection, accounting for 12% of sales and 10% of bestsellers within their respective genres.
However, "Daggermouth" is not just notable for its sales figures. The other leading title in the dataset, "Inked Athena" by Nicole Fox, features a staggering 418 titles on Amazon, while "Daggermouth" appears to be one of only two novels credited to Wolfe in 2025. With a sequel not expected until 2027, this suggests a considerable investment of time and creativity in Wolfe’s writing.
Book reviewer Jennifer Prokop highlighted that "Daggermouth" stirs conversations among romance novel enthusiasts, whereas works by authors like Nicole Fox often go unnoticed. She pointed out that formulaic writing primarily plagues self-published ebooks, particularly those available on Kindle Unlimited. A title’s chart-topping status on Amazon doesn't guarantee that readers are engaged with its content; unethical practices, including buying fake reviews or inflating metrics through click farms, can artificially boost a book’s visibility.
If "Daggermouth" indeed employed AI, it may merely be an anomaly—a title that serendipitously rode the wave of social media hype. This sentiment brings some comfort, yet it may not reflect reality. Christine Larson, a journalism professor specializing in technology’s impact on creativity, suggested that many people may overestimate their ability to identify AI-generated content. Privately, numerous authors have admitted to leveraging AI to enhance their writing processes. Larson firmly believes that a collaboration between human creativity and AI can yield compelling narratives.
The key question may not be if AI-generated bestsellers will emerge, but rather if authors will openly acknowledge their use of such technology. One South African author, Coral Hart, who produces numerous titles annually under various pseudonyms utilizing AI, shares her cautious approach to maintaining anonymity following negative media attention. Hart indicated that even established authors seek her guidance on AI writing techniques yet are reluctant to be transparent due to fears of public backlash.
The stigma surrounding AI in literature is understandable. Claiming authorship for purely AI-generated works undermines the creative process. However, the lack of reliable methods for identifying AI involvement complicates matters. This dynamic often places blame on individual authors instead of addressing the overarching corporate systems in the publishing landscape. As the line between fully AI-generated work and human-assisted writing blurs, a challenging reality emerges where profitability may depend on secrecy. Eventually, the tension surrounding this issue is likely to reach a breaking point.
