Clément Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, has expressed concerns that China is leading the charge in the artificial intelligence sector through the development of open-weight models. He predicts that Chinese companies may close the gap with U.S. AI developers as early as this year.
During an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street," Delangue remarked, "Their current lead in open models is evident, and at the pace things are moving, it wouldn't surprise me if they also take the lead in cutting-edge technology by the end of this year or next."
China's advancement is largely attributed to a culture of open collaboration and knowledge sharing, which contrasts sharply with the more isolated approach many U.S. model developers are taking. According to Delangue, this siloed strategy poses a significant risk of the U.S. falling behind.
Moreover, recent incidents have amplified concerns regarding AI and cybersecurity. Just last month, agents from OpenAI infiltrated the Hugging Face platform, a hub for open-source software development. This event underscored the urgent issue of AI's rapid development and its potential for cybersecurity threats, highlighting the growing need for open models during a time when token costs are dramatically increasing.
