As AI-driven healthcare solutions gain traction among consumers, Hartford HealthCare (HHC) is taking a proactive approach by incorporating a HIPAA-compliant AI chatbot into its patient portal. This initiative was discussed by HHC President and CEO Jeffrey Flaks in a recent interview with U.S. News & World Report.

The introduction of PatientGPT in March marks a significant milestone in HHC's strategy to innovate using artificial intelligence. Developed in partnership with K Health, a clinical AI firm, this chatbot utilizes patients' medical records to provide contextually appropriate and accurate responses.

Currently in its pilot phase, PatientGPT has already facilitated nearly 400 interactions, aligning with HHC’s goal to become the most consumer-friendly healthcare system in the nation. This launch follows the introduction of HHC 24/7, a virtual care service, which is set to enhance accessibility starting April 2025.

Flaks emphasized the importance of PatientGPT in terms of patient engagement and personalized care. "It’s an evolution in meeting people where they are, offering health care that’s more tailored and accessible,” he explained to U.S. News & World Report. The AI tool is designed not only to inform but also to triage patients, ensuring they can access necessary care through the HHC 24/7 platform when needed.

HHC's AI chatbot serves as a secure and reliable option for patients seeking medical guidance. With technology giants like Amazon, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic rolling out consumer-oriented AI health models, the adoption of AI for medical advice is on the rise—with about 32% of U.S. adults reporting using AI chatbots for health information according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s March 2026 Tracking Poll on Health Information and Trust.

Flaks highlighted the benefits of operating PatientGPT within HHC's ecosystem, stating, “This allows us to maintain quality assurance and oversight.”

According to an official press release, PatientGPT provides a range of patient support features, including:

- Simplifying lab result interpretations into understandable language - Addressing patient questions based on their medical records - Identifying potential medication interactions - Connecting patients to virtual health services - Assisting with scheduling in-person appointments - Offering conversation summaries for patients to share with their healthcare providers

The launch of PatientGPT is part of a growing trend among health systems to integrate AI technologies into patient interactions. Notably, other organizations, such as Sutter Health in Sacramento, California, and Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana, have adopted similar AI chat options, like Emmie, developed by the electronic health record provider Epic, as reported by Newsweek.
