OpenAI announced on Friday a major organizational restructuring aimed at streamlining its product offerings, as reported by WIRED. The company’s co-founder and president, Greg Brockman, will now take the lead on product strategy while continuing his responsibilities related to AI infrastructure. This decision comes after he temporarily managed OpenAI's product developments during AGI deployment CEO Fidji Simo’s medical leave, which has now transitioned to a permanent role.
In a memo shared with staff, Brockman highlighted that the initiative aims to consolidate product efforts for a more focused approach toward achieving an agentic future. He emphasized the convergence of OpenAI’s offerings, which includes the decision to integrate ChatGPT and Codex into a single, cohesive user experience.
OpenAI confirmed that its various products, including ChatGPT, the AI-driven coding assistant Codex, and its API for developers, will now operate under a unified product team. The integration is designed to enhance both consumer and enterprise capabilities, allowing for greater autonomous digital task management on behalf of users.
The company is also promoting other leaders as part of this strategic shift. Thibault Sottiaux, head of Codex, will now lead the core product and platform teams. He played a crucial role in Codex’s success and is also involved in the development of OpenAI’s upcoming “super app,” which aims to unify Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser into one desktop application.
Nick Turley, who led ChatGPT since its inception and contributed to its rise to over 900 million weekly active users, will transition to spearheading the company's enterprise products, stepping away from consumer-focused efforts. Additionally, Ashley Alexander, a former VP of Instagram, will now oversee OpenAI’s consumer product division after leading the company’s health-focused initiatives.
These adjustments continue a trend of significant leadership changes at OpenAI, which is working to concentrate its resources on key areas including ChatGPT, Codex, and the anticipated super app. Previously, in light of Simo’s medical leave, OpenAI had announced various executive changes, with Brockman stepping in to guide product strategy. The company reiterated that Simo remains on leave for health reasons but is expected to return, having collaborated closely with Brockman on this restructuring initiative.
