Google is stepping up its game in the artificial intelligence sector by onboarding new talent from Mechanize Inc., a startup based in San Francisco.

Public records indicate that the tech behemoth has successfully finalized a talent acquisition deal with Mechanize. Notably, Tamay Besiroglu, the co-founder and former CEO of Mechanize, has transitioned into a role as a research scientist at Google’s AI division, DeepMind, as highlighted in his LinkedIn profile. Additionally, more than a dozen former employees from Mechanize have joined Google, primarily contributing to the company's midtraining initiatives—crucial components for enhancing its chatbot capabilities.

Neither Google nor Besiroglu has issued any comments regarding this development.

Business Insider previously reported that Google engaged in negotiations for a deal valued at over $1.5 billion for Mechanize's technology and expertise, although the specifics of the agreement were not made public. According to LinkedIn, Guive Assadi, Mechanize's former chief of staff, now holds the title of CEO.

Recently, Google has faced challenges in launching an AI model that effectively competes with others in the market. To gain a competitive edge, the company has opted for talent deals—typically structured to sidestep antitrust concerns—rather than traditional acquisitions. For instance, last year Google acquired talent from the AI coding startup Windsurf, with ex-CEO Varun Mohan now leading Google's agentic coding initiative, Antigravity.

Mechanize's technology is designed to enhance the coding capabilities of AI models, an area where Google has encountered difficulties. Earlier this year, Mechanize announced that it secured $9.1 million in funding at a valuation of $500 million. Prior to founding Mechanize, Besiroglu co-founded Epoch AI, a company dedicated to testing AI models.
