These enhancements include AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a centralized student hub, personalized practice quizzes, and more, all designed to elevate the learning experience.
This rollout underscores Google's ambition to position Gemini as the go-to AI assistant for students, amid rising competition from entities like OpenAI and educational startups such as Knowt and Gauth, which are developing their own educational resources.
In Search, learners can now create bespoke tools and simulations to grasp intricate subjects. For instance, when investigating pH levels, a student can search for "pH scale" and receive an interactive visual through the AI Overview that simplifies the foundational concepts. If they need to dive deeper, they can pose follow-up queries, such as mapping citrus fruits on the pH scale. The AI Mode in Search will then craft a tailored interactive experience to accommodate their specific inquiry.
Moreover, users can now produce customized practice quizzes through Search across various subjects, including science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. Simply entering a request like, "Design a quiz focused on the most frequently tested vocabulary words to aid my SAT preparation," enables Search to generate an engaging quiz experience.
In the upcoming weeks, Google will introduce a new interactive problem-solving feature via Lens in Search. By tapping the "Lens" camera icon in the Google app, students can upload images of their assignments to receive AI-driven explanations, identify errors, and obtain assistance when facing challenges.
Students are also empowered to request the creation of study documents from their uploaded materials, such as PDFs and presentation slides. For example, uploading images of handwritten notes and lecture slides can yield a concise one-page summary that highlights essential concepts.
As for the enhancements to Gemini, one notable addition allows students to initiate multi-step research reports within Gemini Live and then engage in conversational discussions about their findings. Users can command Gemini to conduct research and continue other tasks while it works behind the scenes. Upon completion, they'll receive notifications to review the report and can explore the outcomes or ask related questions verbally.
Additionally, Google announced that Gemini can now create functional 3D simulations, enriching the learning process by providing tables, grids, and tailored simulations in response to queries. For instance, requesting, "demonstrate how DNA functions in 3D," allows users to interactively rotate and zoom in on a 3D visualization of DNA.
To tie all these learning tools together, Google is launching a dedicated hub within the Gemini app. This centralized space will enable users to initiate study notebooks, generate flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more, streamlining their study efforts.
