In Friendswood, Texas, a pioneering flood warning system leveraging artificial intelligence has been launched to enhance safety during potential flooding events. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District, and it aims to provide residents with real-time updates on rising water levels, allowing them to prepare adequately for adverse flooding conditions.
The new system features seven flood sensors strategically placed in Friendswood and League City. Of these, six are situated in the Clear Creek watershed, while one monitors the Dickinson Bayou watershed. Jason Jones, who serves as the secretary of the Galveston County Consolidated Drainage District board, emphasized the necessity of these sensors, stating that the absence of such technology in the area made their implementation a clear priority.
The sensors have been supplied by Simplicity Integration, a tech firm specializing in water and flood intelligence solutions. The system integrates real-time data from the sensors with publicly available information such as rainfall statistics, stream gauge readings, weather station inputs, and soil moisture levels. By employing artificial intelligence, the platform analyzes this data to forecast potential flood scenarios.
Alison Reese, the chief operating officer and co-founder of Simplicity Integration, noted that the AI tool is constantly refined through data ingestion, improving its ability to understand and anticipate water behavior across Texas. The ultimate aim is to equip communities with timely information, enabling them to make informed decisions before flood risks escalate. “The earlier we can give warnings, the better equipped people will be to safeguard themselves and their loved ones,” Reese remarked.
The AI system not only factors in historical flooding trends and current rainfall, but also examines upstream water conditions and soil saturation levels to provide predictive analytics. This functionality allows it to assess how upstream events can impact areas downstream, facilitating crucial decision-making during severe weather situations.
Jones highlighted the importance of this technology for community members, especially in determining the safety of travel routes and the necessity for evacuation. “For someone like me with a truck, my concern is how to get home safely. But for those in low-lying areas or in vehicles, understanding passable escape routes is vital,” he explained.
Additionally, the system includes a public online portal enabling residents to track sensor data in real time and receive alerts related to specific creeks or monitoring sites. The portal features a color-coded map to indicate flood conditions: green for safe conditions, yellow for possible flooding, and red for likely flooding.
For many residents, especially those who have experienced the havoc wrought by past storms like Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Allison, this technology holds significant importance. “People are often on edge, still feeling the impact of those storms—a sort of PTSD,” Jones conveyed. “Now, they can access this crucial information from their phones, whether at home or anywhere else.”
Currently, these flood sensors are operational solely in Friendswood and League City, but plans are in place to extend this innovative technology throughout additional regions in Galveston County.
