Elon Musk's endeavors in artificial intelligence have been marked by inconsistent advancements. This year, his company xAI faced significant talent losses as it struggled to develop AI models capable of rivaling offerings from established competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Musk indicated on social media that a restructuring of xAI was necessary.
Despite xAI's investment in creating two data centers to support its AI initiatives, the operation has not utilized these facilities to their full potential.
Following the merger between xAI and SpaceX, the combined entity secured substantial agreements with Google and Anthropic to supply computing resources. These partnerships are expected to generate billions of dollars each month for SpaceX, which can alleviate the financial burden caused by AI investments that have adversely impacted its profitability. The company reported a staggering loss of $4.9 billion last year, a stark contrast to a $791 million profit in 2024, primarily due to increased AI expenditures.
Franco Granda, an analyst at PitchBook, noted in a report that SpaceX's acquisition of Cursor marks a significant shift in its operational strategy following its public listing.
"The initial public offering granted SpaceX both a valuation increase and a more favorable currency for transactions," he stated. "The signing of a $60 billion all-stock deal just four days post-listing, with the stock price surging more than 50 percent from the initial offering, illustrates the company's new approach."
