Masayoshi Son, the founder of SoftBank, is taking significant steps to secure OpenAI as a key tenant in SB Energy's data center initiative, particularly in light of its upcoming initial public offering (IPO).

According to preliminary IPO filings reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI has been granted warrants valued at approximately $5.5 billion in SB Energy, a company it has invested in previously.

SB Energy is anticipated to publicly announce its IPO filing as early as this week. The company, which is predominantly owned by SoftBank, is collaborating with financial institutions to launch the IPO next month, with ambitions to raise between $5 billion and $7 billion. The final terms of the offering are still in flux and may undergo changes.

These draft documents offer insights into the financial relationships between SB Energy and key stakeholders in its aggressive push into AI infrastructure, including its parent company SoftBank and OpenAI. They highlight the close connections among leading AI entities that are shaping the industry's rapid expansion.

Currently, SB Energy's clientele for its data centers comprises companies that are also its investors. The planned tenants for three of SB Energy’s data centers include both SoftBank and OpenAI, while a fourth facility, which will have a capacity of 900 megawatts in Scurry County, Texas, remains without a customer at this time. Notably, SoftBank is also among the primary investors in OpenAI.
