Fidji Simo, the number two executive at OpenAI, has announced her decision to step down from her full-time position following an extended medical leave. In a message to employees on Thursday, she revealed that her health issues have worsened, resulting in a longer and more challenging recovery process than she originally expected. Moving forward, she will serve as a part-time adviser to the organization.
This change marks another significant shake-up in OpenAI’s leadership as the company gears up for a much-anticipated initial public offering within this year and works to keep pace with competitor Anthropic in the business sector. Simo was appointed by CEO Sam Altman to oversee OpenAI’s product and business teams, and there were expectations she would assume an even more prominent leadership role post-IPO. Now, Altman must seek out new leadership to fill that gap.
Simo joined the company in August and took on numerous key responsibilities previously held by Altman, including supervision of the chief financial officer and chief revenue officer. Earlier this year, she disclosed her medical leave, informing the team that her neuroimmune condition had deteriorated. Her absence led to concerns among employees and investors about the company's strategic direction.
Initially brought in to drive the expansion of ChatGPT, Simo successfully implemented advertising into the widely used chatbot and introduced features such as health guidance. Her prior experiences as CEO of grocery delivery service Instacart and an executive role at Facebook positioned her as an ideal candidate to lead OpenAI's consumer business growth.
