On Tuesday, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, emphasized the need for a self-regulatory framework for the AI sector, advocating for guidance from the US government that places particular emphasis on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and national security.

However, this focus on national security might render the outcomes of such an initiative less appealing to stakeholders outside the US.

Hassabis expressed that the swift advancements in AI necessitate a new strategy for evaluating the capabilities of cutting-edge AI models, one that is dynamic, flexible, and thorough. He argued, “The US is uniquely situated to spearhead the creation of a robust testing framework, given its strong economic and technological capabilities.” He proposed the establishment of a new Standards Body, akin to a public-private partnership or self-regulatory organization overseen by the federal government, similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). This board would ideally feature independent technical experts as well as stakeholders from the open-source community.
