Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, believes that current chatbots are just the beginning of a much larger advancement in artificial intelligence. Hassabis expressed optimism about the potential of AGI during a discussion at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, stating, "I believe we are only a few years away from that, maybe 2030, plus or minus a year — which is astounding to think, really." He envisions AGI as a groundbreaking technological advancement that could usher in a new era for humanity.
AGI is expected to replicate or even surpass human cognitive abilities across a wide range of tasks, including coding, scientific inquiry, and creative endeavors. Unlike today's "narrow" AI, which specializes in specific tasks such as translation and chess, AGI would demonstrate a generalized ability to learn and adapt autonomously, allowing it to tackle complex global challenges and enhance its own functionality independently.
The implications of AGI are revolutionary, potentially providing an almost limitless reservoir of cognitive labor capable of accelerating scientific innovations, automating intricate industries, and transforming global economics. While the exact impact remains uncertain, the advent of such powerful technology could dramatically alter daily life and societal structure.
Hassabis emphasizes the urgency for society to prepare for these transformative changes. During his chat, he referred to AI as entering a "species-level transition" and noted that humanity has "little margin for error" in the coming decade. He believes the evolution of AI agents—systems that can execute a series of tasks in real-world situations—represents the next major advancement. For instance, these agents could plan a week-long vacation across multiple websites or manage a drug development program.
Hassabis views AGI as the "ultimate tool for science," highlighting DeepMind's approach: "Step one: solve intelligence. Step two: use it to solve everything else." Within DeepMind itself, perspectives differ; Shane Legg, the chief AGI scientist, posits a 50% chance for "minimal AGI"—the ability to perform some cognitive tasks on par with humans—by 2028. Although Hassabis recognizes that some predictions may be overly optimistic, he reiterates the critical need for readiness: "We don’t have long to prepare for what that means, and it’s going to be enormously profound."

Despite the promise, there are significant risks associated with AGI. Before we reach the stage of powerful AGI, the labor market is already feeling the effects of AI integration. With AI automating coding, drafting, and various office tasks, over 150,000 jobs were eliminated globally in the first half of 2026 alone. Companies across the tech spectrum are adjusting their workforces: Amazon let go of 30,000 employees, Block downscaled by 40%, and Meta trimmed 10% of its workforce to finance its AI initiatives.
Warnings from figures like Altman suggest that AI could significantly reduce entire job categories, with Amodei estimating that half of entry-level white-collar jobs could vanish in the next five years.
Nevertheless, Hassabis maintains that opportunities for humans will persist even in a job market increasingly influenced by AI. He believes that individuals who possess "taste, design sensibility, original thinking," and the ability to synthesize information will thrive in the coming years. He expressed confidence in human creativity and adaptability, reflecting on humanity's achievements with our primitive brains. "Why would we stop here?" he concluded, emphasizing the potential for continued innovation and evolution.
