Amazon has reached a multi-billion-dollar agreement with Corning to supply optical fiber for its rapidly growing data centers across the United States, marking another significant partnership as both companies play pivotal roles in the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector.
This collaboration was revealed on Monday and will unfold over several years, resulting in the creation of 1,000 new jobs at Corning's facilities in North Carolina, according to statements from both companies. Corning's fiber optic cables are crucial for establishing high-speed connectivity between data centers and the sophisticated technology that resides within them—making them indispensable for AI infrastructure.
Following the announcement, Corning’s stock saw a surge of 4%, while Amazon's shares remained relatively stable.
In a joint statement, the companies underscored the importance of Amazon’s data centers, which support services relied upon by millions. They noted that Corning’s optical solutions form a vital part of this framework, emphasizing that their collaborative investments are integral to bolstering the U.S. economy.
Additionally, the agreement will enhance a training initiative for fiber optic technicians based in North Carolina. Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, highlighted in the press release that Amazon's endeavors in the region have already resulted in the creation of over 26,000 jobs, building on the company's previous commitment to invest $10 billion in new data centers in North Carolina.
